Content Objectives:
Students will be able to sort nouns into groups of common nouns and proper
nouns.
Students will be able to cooperate to write lists of proper nouns.
Language Objectives:
Students will be able to use sentence frames to verbalize the noun type. *I have
____. *It is a common/proper noun.
Students will be able to share ideas with each other during group work (I know!
___ is a character/place/person/holiday. Good idea!)
Materials Needed: Pencil case, home folder, story folder, projector, ActivInspire
flipchart, group posters.
Lesson (45 minutes):

(10-12 min.)*Warm up activities: Individual sight word cards/phonics stories,


Song (The Digraph Dance), Daily Message, Phonemic Awareness, High Frequency
Word practice: very, off (Hickety Pickety Bumblebee)

(15-20 min.)*Review vocabulary: noun, common noun, and proper noun. Discuss
the features of common and proper nouns (common nouns can name general
things, proper nouns are specific and always have a capital letter).

*Sort nouns together. Each student will get a noun card. They will take turns to
stand up and say: My noun is ___. It is a ___ noun. Then, add it to the chart.

*Watch the Properly Named song.

(10 min.)*Group activity: In groups, work together to write proper nouns that fit
each category. Try to speak English together and share writing responsibility.

(3-5 min.)*Share some of your favorite nouns together as a class.

*Follow-up activity: Common and Proper Noun notebook sort (individual). If there is
time, we will start in this period. If there is not time, we will do it in center time.
