For the past 3 years, from July 2011 to August 2014, Katy worked for me in a variety of roles. Initially, she worked for my family strictly as a childcare provider. In this role, Katy showed expertise in managing the care of my two elementary-aged children; therefore, as Katy continued to work for me, I increased her responsibilities to include tutoring duties and general administrative assistance. Both of my children have exhibited behaviors, which were eventually linked to learning and behavioral disorders. This created difficulties for both of my boys when doing homework, being successful in the classroom, testing, and transitioning into different grades. The specific academic areas they needed additional assistance in were reading and writing. Katy’s role was tutoring and providing specialized attention to their educational needs. Based on her natural ability to identify a situation and want to improve it, Katy consulted with me on various learning techniques and suggested different learning strategies that directly addressed the concerns and ultimately helped both children be more successful at school and at home. With Katy’s help, my sons are now more confident and successful than they ever were prior to having Katy’s guidance. Pve seen that Katy has taken the knowledge that she has gained from her experience from Michigan State University and applied it to the experiences she had with our children. One of the areas where she made a significant impact has been in her work utilizing a program with our son called “Handwriting without Tears.” Her efforts in this area have helped improve our son’s writing abilities tremendously and we were so pleased that he became successful and now functions as well as his peers. Through hands-on activities, Katy has shown us techniques to help both of our sons become more effective in their school work. ‘One of Katy’s key strengths is her dedication to the children’s success. I have developed a strong level of ‘rust with Katy’s patience and skills in working with our children effectively.
