I am committed to you as a person, student, and artist.

I pledge to open the door

for your creativity as well as to root out and listen to your thinking. I pledge to
remove myself from the center of the learning and place you there, to encourage
your growth as a creative problem solving member of society. I pledge to come to
class with a smile on my face, a commitment to our relationship, and enthusiasm
for art in my soul.

My dream to become an art teacher is fueled by my passion for Art, as well

as my fascination with childrens art. I am encouraged by watching the
freedom with which they create.
Teaching is not just a dissemination of knowledge; it is also about facilitating
the acquisition of growth. In my choice-art studio classroom, the student is
the artist and is treated like an artist with choices of media and subject
matter. The students utilize current and prior knowledge to explore and
create authentic art. I encourage the student artists to experiment and
celebrate failure. My belief is that with failure growth is realized. Through
Art the student enters a path of a growth mindset to persist on long term
goals. With an emphasis on the Studio Habits of Mind, the student artists will
develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, stretch and
explore, understand the art world, and finally reflect. In this fashion the Art
they create is as individual as their finger print.

My approach is to encourage their intrinsic creativity and facilitate its

manifestation through studio centers based on the choice-based art
education model. I hope to inspire the student artists to love learning and
creating. I hope to be one aspect in the development of life-long learners
and creatives who take this passion into whatever field of study they find
themselves in years to come.

My desire to teach art is not a destination but a lifelong adventure with learning.

Teaching art is the best job in the world. I wanted to be a teacher from a very
young age. I was always the self-appointed teacher when my sisters and I would
play pretend school. It was hard for me to share this position.
As a teacher of the visual arts, I offer the students unique opportunities for personal
growth through exploration and examination of media, ideas, imagination, and
relationships. Through encounters with creative problem solving, the student will
develop critical thinking skills and visual literacy. The students will demonstrate an
understanding and analysis of art history, aesthetics, criticism, as well as global
cultures. My art classroom is a safe learner centered environment which
encourages a growth mind-set while examining artworks of self and others.
I wanted to be an art teacher from a very young age. Through out my early
childhood my siblings and I played a game of pretend school. I alsways occupied
the role of teacher, as I was the first to venture off into that wonderful vast
unknown. In fact, my youngest sister attributes much of her academic success to
that early introduction to letters and numbers. As I grew and they had real
teachers, our pretend games ended; however the seed was planted.
In fourth grade I had an awakening to what would become my passion. Mrs. Hart,
my teacher, allowed our class to use her special pastel chalks. From that moment
forward, my eyes were opened to the world of art. I was hungry for the experiences
of color, line, shape, and texture. I am not sure I would have continued my
educational career past High School if I did not have this one pivotal experience.
My passion was reaffirmed upon graduating High School. I received a small
scholarship from the Education Association to continue studying Art. Therefore, my
fourth grade teacher gave me a key to a very different life while my high school art
teacher pushed me forward.

I see the art teacher as the guide who is working in collaboration with the student
artists to encouraging the students understanding of the world.

Teaching is about learning. I am a lifelong learner. As a teacher of visual art I strive

to instill the thrill of learning and my passion for art appreciation as well as art
making into the students who cross my path.

Art Teaching Philosophy

My desire to teach art is not a destination but a lifelong adventure with

learning. I have wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. As a child, I

was always the self-appointed teacher during pretend play with my sisters.

It was hard for me to share this position. Through my fourth grade teacher, I

found my passion and subject matter which I wanted to teach. The seed was

planted.

As a teacher of visual art, I offer the students unique opportunities for

personal growth through exploration of media, ideas, imagination, and

relationships. Through encounters with creative problem solving, the student

will develop critical thinking skills and visual literacy. The students in my art

room will demonstrate an understanding and analysis of art history,

aesthetics, and criticism, as well as global cultures while encountering a safe

learner centered environment which encourages a growth mind-set.

My approach is to encourage their intrinsic creativity and facilitate its

manifestation through studio centers as presented in the choice-based art

education model. I hope to inspire the student artists to love learning and

creating. I hope to be one aspect in the development of life-long learners

and creatives who take this passion into whatever field of study they find

themselves in years to come. I strive to instill the thrill of learning and my

passion for art appreciation and art making into the lives of the students who

cross my path. Teaching art is the best job in the world.
