The exit of Cyrus Mistry surprised many as did his entry four years back. The
reasons though not officially communicated, are speculated to be declining
performance and mounting debts with a greater emphasis on cash cows.'
Mistry's approach of shedding non-profit businesses, including the
conglomerate's steel business in Europe, is not supposed to go down well with
Tata Sons board. For the time, Ratan Tata would be heading the firm, along with
deciding the new successor in 4 months

Venezuela Crisis
Venezuela has the worlds highest inflation rate and is supposed to rise to 1660%
next year according to a World Bank report. This has led to food shortages, lack
of medical supplies and severe power cuts which are hampering the economy.
Both the government and opposition are blaming each other. The opposition has
launched Political trial against the President Nicolas Maduro who terms it
illegitimate.' The reason for the turmoil has been linked to low oil prices which
form 95% of Venezuelas export, thus severely hurting its revenue and public
welfare initiatives.

2016 Man Booker Prize --Paul Beatty


Paul Beatty became the first US author to be awarded the prestigious literary
prize. He was awarded the prize for The Sellout,' a story of a black man trying to
reinstate slavery and racial segregation in the heart of Los Angeles. The award
aims at recognizing and encouraging finest literary fiction written in English and
published in the United Kingdom.

India still at 130th in Ease of Doing Business ranking by World Bank


The World Bank report had revised Indias rank to 131 from earlier 130th for the
year 2016.India ranks lowest in Doing Business among the BRICS nations--Russia
(40), South Africa (74), China (78), Brazil (123) and India (130).

India ranks 87th on the WEFs Global Gender Gap Report 2016
India has been ranked 87th out of 144 countries on the World Economic Forums
(WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2016. India has climbed 21 spots from 108th
position in 2015. The report measures gender gap as progress towards parity
between men and women in four areas (i) Educational attainment, (ii) Health and
survival, (iii) Economic opportunity and (iv) Political empowerment.

CO2 level reaches record high in 2016: WMO
According to the World Meteorological Organizations (WMO) annual Greenhouse
Gas Bulletin level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the atmosphere has
reached a record high. The globally averaged concentration of CO2 in the
atmosphere reached to 400 parts per million (ppm) for the first time in 2015. It is
expected to surge again to new records in 2016 on the back of the very powerful
El Nio event.

TRAI recommends Rs 3,050 crore penalty on Airtel, Vodafone & Idea


Telecom Regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has
recommended Department of Telecom (DoT) to impose combined penalty of
3,050 crore rupees on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea Cellular. It had mentioned
that the penalty should be imposed on these telecom companies for allegedly
denying interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio.

India wins 2016 Kabaddi World Cup

India has won the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup by defeating Iran by 38-29 score in
the final match played at the Arena By TransStadia in Ahmedabad (Gujarat. It
was Indias third consecutive Kabaddi World Cup in the Standard Style version of
Kabaddi. Earlier India had won in 2004 and 2007.

ECB's for Start-Ups- a push by RBI
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday issued rules permitting these to
raise external commercial borrowings (ECBs).In a statement, RBI said the
borrowing per start-up was capped at $3 million per financial year. It could be
either in rupees or a convertible foreign currency or a combination of both. The
money could be used for any expenditure of the borrowers business.
AT&T announces merger with Time Warner
After acquiring DirecTV last year and thus becoming USs largest cable or
satellite TV provider, AT&T has decided to merge with Time Warner which would
give it ownership of HBO, CNN and many other programming channels. The
merger needs to be approved by regulatory authorities which could block the
deal, but AT&T has already committed an offering of $35 billion package.

Qualcomm acquires NXP
Qualcomm announced acquisition of NXP Semiconductor for $47 billion, which is
the biggest ever semiconductor deal. NXP makes smartphone chips -- it makes
the NFC payment chips and once supplied Apple's motion co-processors inside
the iPhone -- the company has a huge presence in the automotive, security and
Internet of Things industries. In fact, NXP boasts that it powers 14 of the 15
most-popular vehicle infotainment consoles.
