Power Quality Design Project

Spring 2016

Part 1: Harmonic Filter

A 1500 kVA load operating at 4.16 kV is drawing an 11th harmonic current that is 11%
the magnitude of the fundamental frequency current. This negative-sequence harmonic is
causing motors to overheat.

A fixed 300 kvar capacitor bank exists on the 4.16 kV bus for power factor correction.
Specify a suitable reactor to put in series with the capacitor to attenuate the 11th harmonic
current. Make sure all IEEE standards regarding capacitor capability are followed.

Graduate students: Simulate the response of your filter using appropriate software. If
a 13th harmonic current equal to 8% of the fundamental frequency current also exists,
show what your filter does to the amplitude of that current.

Part 2: Voltage Sag Ride-Through

A manufacturing facility has a total electrical demand of 2000 kVA. During voltage sags
in excess of 15%, key equipment shuts down, leading to financial losses. An analysis
shows that PLCs constituting 20 kVA of load are causing the shutdowns. These PLCs
control 800 kVA of motor load.

Propose a design to keep the PLCs operating during voltage sags that can last up to 15
seconds. Your solution must incorporate a primary technology based on the LAST digit
of your U-number.

Last Digit of U-number Technology

0 or 1 ferroresonant transformer
2 or 3 UPS
4 or 5 flywheel
6 or 7 superconducting energy storage
8 or 9 high-speed transfer switch

Locate suitable equipment to implement your design, produce an engineering drawing

communicating the design, and show that your design will mitigate the problem.

Graduate students: Cite at least three engineering standards governing your design.
Show that your design conforms to these standards.

Enjoy!
