16. (a) (i) The amount of lime required for softening water using Lime Soda process can be
calculated using the formula, {74/100{Temporary hardness (T.H) Ca2++ 2 x T.H of Mg2+ 6
+ Permanent hardness (P.H) (Mg2+ + Fe2+ + Al3+) + CO2 + H+ + HCO3- - NaAlO2}
1) Why there is a need to multiply T.H. of Mg2+ with 2?
2) Give the reaction between permanent hardness causing magnesium salts with lime.
3) Why Al3+ is included in the formula?
(ii) Discuss the regeneration processes of Zeolite and Ion exchange resins. 4

18. (a) Discuss the chemistry of NiCad batteries. How the problem of overcharging can be 7+3
handled by the design of NiCad batteries?

(b) Why lithium is the most preferred metal for batteries? Explain the mechanism of 2+8
working of lithium ion batteries.
19. (a) (i)A lignite coal sample got from Neyveli, Tamilnadu was found to be having 70 % 6
Carbon, 20 % hydrogen, 5 % oxygen, 2 % sulphur and remaining. Can you identify the
methods which are employed for the elemental analysis?. Discuss them in detail and the
significance of these elements in a coal sample.
(ii) Define octane rating. Relate the structure of hydrocarbons with the tendency for 4
petrol knocking.

(b) (i)A gaseous fuel contains a mixture of hydrocarbons,
CH4=20 %;C2H6 = 40 % C3H8 = 30 % C4H10 = 8 % . Calculate the minimum amount of

air required for the complete combustion of 10 litres of this fuel.

20. (a) (i) List out any five differences between thermo and thermosetting plastics. 4

(ii) Give the structural requirements for a biodegradable polymer and explain with any 5
