The effect of extract betel leaf water (Piper betle) against discoloration of teeth
and Islams opinion in this matter.
Water extract of betel leaf (Piper betle) contain tannins which is a chromogenic agent to provide extrinsic discoloration effect on the tooth enamel. Tooth staining effect constitute to aesthetic problem, one of them due to the use of mouthwash from betel leaf. The aim is to determine the differences in the effect of water extract of betel leaves to colour change in the enamel and the colour absorbance (absorption) in solution. This study is a laboratory experimental with a sample of 30 specimens of maxillary and mandibular premolars newly extracted for orthodontic treatment is divided into 5 treatment groups. Applications consists of extract betel leaf concentration of 50% (n = 6), 33% (n = 6), 25% (n = 6), 5% (n = 6) and control group aquabidest (n = 6), and the color values performed during the soaking time 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours using the VITA Easyshade.Calculation of absorbance of the solution by UV-VIS Spectrophotometry can be done with the formula A = * * b * c. Statistical results from One Way ANOVA, there are significant differences in the colour changes to the application concentration variation between the length of extract betel leaf water 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours with pValue (0.011) (0.035) (0.026) <0.05. Post test results of HOC LSD vary depending on the colour change. But the concentration of 25% with a soaking time of 72 hours was more effective. And test results of descriptive non-parametric calculations there is a difference colour absorbance change in a solution of water extract of betel leaf. It was concluded that the application of extract betel leaf water as a mouthwash can improve discoloration of tooth enamel in line with the length of the application. From the viewpoint of Islam that consuming mouthwash in excess is legal makruh. Keywords: Colour change of enamel, Absorbance solution, betel leaf aqueous extract, tannins, extrinsic stain.
