19th Century Britain: Queen Victoria's Influence

Britain in the 19th century saw significant changes and growth under the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. As both Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India, Victoria brought new ideals of family life, morality, and law-abiding citizenship to Britain. She believed the private conduct of the monarch should match their public duties. A key event was the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, the first international expo that highlighted Britain's growing global empire by showcasing objects from colonies like India and Australia. British society embraced a new model of the "gentleman" during this period.

between the two of them.
