POOR MAN'S JAMES BOND Vol. 1 Pyrotechny 194 PYROTECHNY by George W. Weingart A PRACTICAL MANUAL FOR MANUFACTURERS OF FIREWORKS, SIGNALS FLARES AND PYROTECHNIC DISPLAYS INDEX Page 252 “The Mon with Hat in Hond anne © Talented itintet a5 cells Beco cee sata oF ee. Renee oe See To those contemplating the making of fireworks, either profes it desirable to under- and the principles which govern the operations of the various devices as well ax the compositions of the chemi- ceala entering into their produation. ‘The principle of colored lights is based on: la. Producing & mixture that will bum at reasonable speed while generating an intense heat, 2nd. Adding thereto the salte of such elements, in the spectrum of which, predominate lines of the de- sired colors. Heat generating compounds consift chiefly of (a). Sub@ances which yield oxygen freely when ignited in the presence of carbon, Potassium chlorate, Potassium per-chlorete, Potassium nitrate, ‘Sodium chlorate, Barium nitrate, Stontium nitrate. (B). Carbon and carbonaceous sources, viz: Charcoal, ‘Shella: Fossil gume, Resins, Asphaltum, Dext Stearine, Sugar of milk, Corn flour etc. In addition to the above there are some substances which when added to colored fre compositions increase the affinity of the several confiituents for one another thereby improving the colors, viz. Sulphur Picrie acid ‘and in the in@tance of blue and green fires it is almom essential to add an easily volatilized chloride in order to feet sufficient depth of color. vir: Calomel Sal Ammoniae. ‘The exact function of these laf named subsances is not entirely clear but it appears that the bef spectrums are yielded by the chlorides of the elements. However moft chlorides are deliquescent and therefore unsuited to fireworks making. By adding a substance that yields chlorine freely at the moment of decomposition the necenry conditions are produced for abmining the bes results, ‘The following substances are mot generally used for producing pyrotechnical colors. To successfully launch a parachute from a shell or rocket requires the greates care and skill, besides patient attention to every detail or the light fabric will ether fail te unfold or be torn or bumed in its exit from the tube in which it is placed. To begin with procure some very light Japanese tissue paper, cut into spuares about 18 inches each way and rub thoroughly with powdered soap. fone* Cut four pieces of stout linen twine or shoe- makers thread about 18 long. Twit the comers of the tissue squares a litte and tie a thread to each. Draw the other four ends of threads together and tie them in a knot. The parachute is now ready to fold. In one hand take the knot where the four @rings meet and in the other take the top of the parachute by the center, Draw the hands apart until the paper folds together and Iny on the table in front of you. Saighten out the four folda, two each way, and fold them again laterally toward “Ready made parachutes may now be purchased from @ock, the center about five or six times like the bellows of an accordeon uatil the pile ia about | inch wide, Now roll this up lightly beginning at the small end or tip until you come to the arings, then wind the four dings lightly, around the bundled parachute until it will jus about ft the rocket head for whieh it is intended. For making the light ram a short case %* diameter and I" long with box @ar cortposition, Prime one end fand Mop the other with clay. Over clayed end glue a ‘cardboard dise alightly smaller than inside diameter of rocket head, having fr passed a wire through the case under the dise so a to form a loop on exposed size as shown, (Fig. 35). Pass about 16 inches of @out linen Fig.as twine through the wire loop and tie the other end to 224 PYROTECHNY the knot on the parachute where the four fringe come together, Roll a piece of naked match about 18 long. into a bunch and place it in the bottom of the rocket head for a blowing charge. On top of this diop the ‘over it place « le cotton hulla or bran. Now slip in the parachute around which the @rings hhave been lightly wound. Fill all around parachute with bbran and secure the top of rocket head very lightly 10 the parachute will be thrown out when discharged, with the least possible effort CHAIN ROCKETS, (Caterpilars). If you have succeeded with parachute rockets you may now attempt this modification of the above which is infinitely more difficult but their great beauty compend tea for the trouble required in their preparation. A pare- te several times larger than the firt described is made in subfantally the same manner but preferably oAagonal with the separate pieces sewed together. Inftead of one light, a dozen or 40 of diflerent colored lights are attached to it This ia called the chain and to launch it success {ally from either rocket or shell ia about as dificult a proposition as the pyrotechnitt is called upon to execute. For the lights composing the chain ordinary lances may be used To a 4 Ib. rocket take 12. Procue a rong linen twine about 18 feet long. To this attach the lances at intervala of abgut 134 feet, by taking two half hitches around the bottom ends, (\t is best to make special lancee for this purpose, filing the first # inch at the bottoms with clay). When all are fattened, tie one tend of chain to parachute and at the other begin to wind up the alack between the lances. Wind each lance with the alack between it and the nest one to it, winding as smoothly av possible without lapping the twine anywhere. ‘As each one ia wound lay it againf the other one before it until the 12 are in a round bundle. Then take a few tums around the entire bunch on upper end, 20 as to hold it together. At the bottom end of bunch take two turhe of light cord not more than % inch from the end. ‘This ia to hold the lot together until the lights all take fire when this cord burns off and chain unwinds in the tir. A cardboard wad fiting easily in the rocket head nd with a hole through ite center ia placed on top of primed ends of the bunch of lances and « piece of match passed through the hole in same so as to touch them. This may be fattened in place with « small tack or two, Now prepare the rocket head for the reception of the chain, as direded for parachute rockets, by placing about 2 feet of naked match in bottom of head for the blow- ing charge.
