Editors Note
Dear readers,
Summer is in the air, bringing with it the sweet aroma of fruit in season, the fire-
bright color of flowers in blossom, and the joyous laughter of children welcoming the big
vacation. Yes, summer is the time of the most awaited vacation of the year.
To you freshmen, this summer will significantly be the very first you have as a student at
this school. It is also time to reflect back on the whole school year you have been
through. How does it feel to take on the status of a ULISer? Is it laden with deadlines and
portfolio? Is it overwhelming with new courses and new friends? Is it frolicking with
new-found relationships and savoring memories to remember for life? Or is it plainly
life-changing with those emotions mixed up altogether? Whatever it is, we believe it is all
worth.
You are holding in your hands the ninth issue of E-magazine, a publication
exclusively made by and for ULIS first-year students. From the very first to the very last
page, you are promised a journey full of emotions to get to know how our writers, same
age as you, have spent their first year in this beloved institution. We hope you will find a
piece of yourself in their writing. We hope you laugh their laughter, cry their sorrow,
empathy their anxiety, and feel a resonating beat of emotion between the lines. That's
how this issue of ours fulfills its mission: to bring you to our world and to let you find
part of your own world inside it.
Thank you for your valued readership. We appreciate your comments, which will
definitely help us improve. We look forward to welcoming you in our next issue.

In a small house, there are three beautiful clocks. They are called Quick, Slow and Normal. One
day, they had an argument about who the most useful to human is.

Quick began: I always urge people to be more and more hurried. In this time, if they dont hurry
and grasp all opportunities, they will never get success.

Slow angrily answered: Human always complains why time passes so fast. They are so many
things they havent completes, so many sweet moments they are enjoying soon go away. With
me, they are always happy. I give them more time to fulfil their hope, give them more time to be
over the moon at what they have achieved.

Quick continued: But how they can forever live like that. Life never lets them stop. The more
time you give them to over-enjoy, there harder they are to leave something and move on.

Slow got annoyed: The moments which have passed by will never come back. So why dont we
prolong each moment now? Then if it goes by, people wont regret for what they cant do due to
the lack of some seconds.

It was in tense situation between Slow and Quick that Normal now raised its voice: Come on,
guys! I know both of you do want to be useful to human, but think again. All need to face the
truth on their own. They cant erase or hide it.

I want to see people understand exactly what they are doing, make use of their time and also
consideration for each moment they own, the need to speed up everything will themselves tired
and exhausted while the slowness brings them to the lagging behind. What people need now is
the know-how to keep balance, to share, to put themselves under pressure and also to make
themselves relaxed.

However, the argument between Quick and Slow didnt stop. Each of them wanted to keep their
ideas, and not after a long time, they died because they were too exhausted in a nonsensical
quarrel. And Normal was still normal, precious, and regular, tik tok tik tok

And how about your clock? How beautiful it is! But look at it again, and find out whether it is

AND THE STORY BEGINS

My parents are both farmers. My family doesnt have an easy life. However, they always give
me favorable conditions to grow and to study. They believe that good education will make my
future better than theirs. And I know they are right.

Even when they hope that I study well, they have never forced me to study too much. I can
choose what I want to study myself. And when I chose a university to apply for, they only asked
me which university I loved. They let me decide and approved of my choice while many
relatives wanted me to choose another university. At last, I entered the University of Languages
and International Studies, the university I love the most.

In the university, everything is quite different from what Ive heard. Its not an easy thing like
many people told me. To catch up with others, you have to try your best, and you have to work
hard. Of course you can choose not to study but to play more. Its OK. But the result will be very
bad.

13
At first, I couldnt get used to studying in university. I felt over-whelmed. I didnt know how
to do exercises, what to do first, where to find books, etc. Therefore/ Hence/Thus, the result was
that deadlines seemed to sink me down. Its a terrible but precious time. You should know that
whenever you have problem, you can always ask for help. Dont hesitate because there are many
people willing to help you.

I received much valuable help from my teachers, elder students, and new friends in the
university. I have leant a lot of things from them about how to find information, how to manage
time. Now Im not afraid of the exercises or the deadlines any more.

Although student life is not as easy as I heard before, its certainly one of the most wonderful
period in my life. It may be hard sometimes, but most of the time, its interesting. And its where
I take the first step to make my dream come true.

For a wonderful student life, I think the quote below is a so true motto:

Thoughts in my Mind

These days of one year ago

I was still a schoolgirl of a high school.

I was trying my best to pass the biggest and most significant exam in my life: THE
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAM.
I had a dream of leaving my hometown - a poor countryside to hope for a better life in the
capital-Ha Noi.
I used to love getting out of my parents hands in order not to be criticized all the time.
I desired time would elapse more quickly for the distance of the present and the future to become
closer.

However, now after one year

I have felt that I should not have such thoughts Being a first-year student is not a simple
mission. It demands you to perform well both in class and social activities. Someone may say
that its unnecessary to do well in both aspects and , only one is enough. I used to raise this
thought in the early days in the university. But after some situations I had to face, I suddenly
realized that: Its not enough. Its not all for a real student. If you always get good marks in
class, but refuse to take part in a social activity, Im afraid that youll not be perfect. You are a
modern teen, you need to be more active and enthusiastic through social activities. If youre
always the leader of all activities, but you ignore your study, I think that you may only be half
successful on the way to your future. In all areas of our life, our knowledge will be appreciated.
How about thinking about this?
The life of a student in the university is beyond my imagination. Its not less stressful
than I thought.
When I have already been a first-year student, I am forced to accept to live far from my
hometown, my family and leave behind all memories. Its one of the hardest periods of time. I
think every first-year student needs to experience it so that they are more mature.

15
Every day, every night, the homesickness like the flame in my mind only waits for the
right moment to burn out. Sometimes I dont want to do anything, I just want to leave everything
behind to go home to meet my mother, my father, my brotherI only want to become smaller,
only one year is okay, to live with them more, to be taken care of day after day once againAt
this time, I no longer feel like getting out of my parents hands. I dont feel that its a nuisance to
be criticized all the time anymore. On the contrary, I begin to desire it, because at least at that
time I could live with them. Now I have to deal with every problem on my own since my parents
are not here.. But I know they have always been watching over me from afar. They are always
the best shoulders for me to cry on. I miss the strenuousness of my father. I love his vest damp
with sweat in the hot summer days. I love my father having to get up early and stay up late on
cold winter days to work hard to earn money for us to study. One month ago, I paid a visit to my
parents after three month living far from them. I got really shocked when I saw my fathers hairs
with more white strands. This motivates me to study harder to repay their kindness. I know only
this makes my parents feel happy and I also know that my parents can do anything for us as long
as we learn well and become good children.
I dont desire that time will elapse more quickly for the distance of the present and the future to
become closer any more because time only makes my parents older and my soul seems to be
fronzen whenever I think about this!
Winter comes. A new year will begin soon. And this year I will have a special New Years
Eve party with all my lovers in the position of a first-year student. Just think of them, I feel my
heart warmer
At the moment, the clock is striking1 a.m. A fresh day has just started. After a sleep, Ill ride
my bicycle to the university a 6-kilometer distance Ill look at the skyscrapers with the hope
and belief that one dayIll return to my beloved hometown, building it richer and nicer
I am deep in a sweet dream with the melody the life gives me

I live in dormitory. From the first day to nowadays, this place is my second lovely home.
The most memorable time with my roommates is a Friday night when, we, 10 people, went to
cinema together. And Im going to tell you about that night and my feelings about it.

We all came back at 5.30 pm and then we prepared for the trip. As you know, girls
always have a lot of things to do before they go out such as dressing up, making up, and so do
we. We planed to go out at 6 pm but we actually went out at 7 pm. That was the preparation step.

We had to wait for 30 minutes to be able to catch a taxi and we arrived at the National
cinema at 7.45 pm. Unfortunately, there was only one movie shown at that time so t we had no
other choice but watched that movie. When it was over (to avoid repetition after that in the
later part), we took a lot of photos in order to put them up to facebook.

17
After that , we walked to find a restaurant but we were unlucky. It rained heavily and we still
didnt find out any. Finally, we came back to the dormitory to eat beef noodle. Although there
were some troublesome, we all had fun because we went together and talked together.

That is all what happened at that night, someone will say it is a boring story but with me, it
is memorable. Each of us has a different timetable so it is hard for us to find free time. We have
never gone out together before. We know that the life in the dormitory isnt as comfortable as in
a rented house because it is always full of people and you dont have your own room. You want
to sleep but your roommates want to listen to music, or you want to study because you meet the
deadline tomorrow but they are making noise. The solution is that you have to be friendly with
your roommates to make life easier. The time going with my roommates makes us know more
about each other and helps us to live in harmony. Through that time, I know one of my
roommates cant eat eggs, another cant eat onions. I care about them deeply and they care about
me too. I really love them like my sisters.

That is what Im feeling as a freshman, everything is new, strange but dormitory is so

close to me and I find happy time when I am here. I wonder if I would miss this time when I am
30 or 40 years old. I think I do!

Finally, my dream came true. Now, I am a

entered into the university; I felt I was
really small. My feelings mixed. I didnt
understand the reasons why I felt little
nervous, only excited and would like to
discover it immediately. Actually, what I
saw and felt it in person was more
wonderful than I have expected.

As a result, I knew ULIS clearly not

Part-time Job For Students

Besides studying at university, almost students find out
some part time jobs to do in free time because of many reasons.
Approximately 50% of students work part-time during
semester. For many the main reason is to earn extra
money. Some of them maybe want to develop communication
skill and have more experience. Others like to improve the way
to balance work with study time management. Everything they
do is very good for their future. However, not many students
know the way to seek a good part time job and understand the
advantages and disadvantages of the job they are working.
After interviewing, we realize that most students focus on three
part time jobs: teaching, translating and selling. We will point
you some interesting things about them.

If you are a student and you are looking for a part time job, salesman is a atractive partime job
for you.You can find the job by searching information on Internet or leaflets. Contacting with
some shops near your university and your house also is a effective watell everyone you know
that you're looking for work. Speak with teachers, family, coaches, friends, parents of friends,
anyone you can think of, to ask for help. Most jobs are found through referrals and people you
know are often happy to assist. You can also find
vacancies by asking around at shops, bars and
restaurants. Many advertise vacancies in their
windows.Next, make sure you dress
appropriately, are ready to complete an
application, and are prepared for an on-the-spot
interview. If. It can give you much necessary
experiences. It can make you more clever and
mature. When selling goods, you have more
chances to communicate with many people with
different ages, characters and jobs. This
experience will change your attitude toward life
and the people around you. Of course, you can
get money to improve your life and afford to many necessary study tools. Moreover, only by
working can make you aware the value of the money and teach you how to spend money useful.

However, the job has some challenge and disadvantages. You must have a good
communication skill, patience and a good heath. Furthermore, you should arrange your work
suitably to have time for your studying at university. When you work as a shopkeeper, you have

24
to consider many other things. It will be dangerous when you have
to stay out night to look out the goods. You should be carefully
when stay alone. If you have to come home late, you should go
in the large streets to avoid every danger. .

As you can see, choosing a part-time job suit you is

not easy. You can find everything good for you but it
sometime causes many challenges. You must think carefully
before selecting and when you decided to do, you need to take
the responsibilities. Especially, if you are an ULISer, you should
have a part-time job to practice your language skills and working styles.
Hope you apply your lessons at university to the life and a good step for your future.

BUSINESS CORNER

In 1906, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto ( 1848- 1923) created a

mathematical formula to describe the unequal distribution of
wealth in his country, observing that twenty percent of the people
owned eighty percent of the wealth. In the late 1940s, Dr. Joseph
M. Juran inaccurately attributed the 80/20 Rule to Pareto, calling it
Pareto's Principle. While it may be misnamed, Pareto's Principle
or Pareto's Law as it is sometimes called, can be a very effective
tool to help you manage effectively. Do you know how this theory
appear in our lives? You may be surprised.

Where did it come from ?

After Pareto made his observation and created his formula, many others observed similar
phenomena in their own areas of expertise. Quality Management pioneer, Dr. Joseph Juran,
working in the US in the 1930s and 40s recognized a universal principle he called the "vital few
and trivial many" and reduced it to writing. In an early work, a lack of precision on Juran's part
made it appear that he was applying Pareto's observations about
economics to a broader body of work. The name Pareto's
Principle stuck, probably because it sounded better than Juran's
Principle.

As a result, Dr. Juran's observation of the "vital few and trivial

many", the principle that 20 percent of something always are
responsible for 80 percent of the results, became known as
Pareto's Principle or the 80/20 Rule.

What does it mean ?

The 80/20 Rule means that in anything a few (20 percent)

are vital and many(80 percent) are trivial. In Pareto's case it
meant 20 percent of the people owned 80 percent of the
wealth. In Juran's initial work he identified 20 percent of the
defects causing 80 percent of the problems. Project
Managers know that 20 percent of the work (the first 10
percent and the last 10 percent) consume 80 percent of your
time and resources. You can apply the 80/20 Rule to almost
anything, from the science of management to the physical

26
world. And the economics, too.

You know 20 percent of your stock takes up 80 percent of your warehouse space and that 80
percent of your stock comes from 20 percent of your suppliers. Also 80 percent of your sales
will come from 20 percent of your sales staff. 20 percent of your staff will cause 80 percent of
your problems, but another 20 percent of your staff will provide 80 percent of your production. It
works both ways.

How It Can Help You ?

The value of the Pareto Principle for a manager is that it reminds you to focus on the 20 percent
that matters. Of the things you do during your day, only 20 percent really matter. Those 20
percent produce 80 percent of your results. Identify and focus on those things. When the fire
drills of the day begin to sap your time, remind yourself of the 20 percent you need to focus on.
If something in the schedule has to slip, if something isn't going to get done, make sure it's not
part of that 20 percent.

The key theme of the 80/20 Principle applied to

business is how to create the greatest stakeholder
value and generate most money with the least
expenditure of assets and efforts. Any individual
business can gain immensely through practical
application of this Principle. The most important
use of the 80/20 Principle is "to isolate where you
are really making the profits and, just as important,
where you are loosing money. Every business
person thinks they know this already, and nearly all
are wrong. If they had the right picture, their whole
business would be transformed."

The game is to spot the few places where you are making great surpluses be that a product, a
market, a customer type, a technology, a distribution channel, a department, a country, a type of
transaction, an employee, or a team and to maximize them; and to identify the places where you
are loosing and get out.

Stone and Stone - Breaker

A very strict officer was talking to some new soldiers whom he had to train. He had never
seen them before, so he began:
My name is Stone, and Im even harder than stone, so do what I tell you or therell be
trouble. Dont try any tricks with me, and then well get on well together.
Then he went to each soldier one after the other and asked him his name. Speak loudly
so that everyone can hear you clearly, he said, and dont forget to call me "sir".
Each soldier told him his name, until he came to the last one. This man remained last one.
This man remained silent, and so Captain Stone shouted at him, When I ask you a
question, answer it! Ill ask you again: Whats your name, soldier?
The soldier was very unhappy, but at last he replied.
My names Stone-breaker, sir, he said nervously.

Lucy
A young mother believed that it was very wrong to waste any food when there were so
many hungry people in the world. One evening, she was giving her small daughter her tea
before putting her to bed. First, she gave her a slice of fresh brown bread and butter, but
the child said that she did not want it like that. She asked for some jam on her bread as
well.
Her mother looked at her for a few seconds and then said, "when I was a small girl like
you, Lucy, I was always given either bread and butter, or bread and jam, but never bread
with butter and jam."
Lucy looked at her mother for a few moments with pity in her eyes and then said to her
kindly, "Arent you pleased that youve come to live with us now?"
