Canon Law in General

The word canon comes from the Greek word Kanon which means
reed or ruler
Reed measurement for order
Ruler straightening

Meaning:
Canon is measurer or ruler used by the carpenter or designer or
standard by which things are measured
o E.g. accepted standard for art or professionals

Distinction between Civil and Canon Law


Civil Law: Behavioural rules promulgated by the government for
the citizens. The term used is NOMOS/Lex
Canon Law: Exclusively for disciplinary laws promulgated by the
church for its members. The term use CANON

Definition of Canon Law


Canon law is some total of laws issued by the competent
authority in the church ordained toward the spiritual and lately
salvation of souls (Salus animarum C.1752)

Kinds of Laws
Universal Law: it is applied to the entire church
Particular Law: applied to a segment or determine place group
of the church
Proper law: is the constitution of the roman community
propels in
Special law: refers to the process like election of pope,
canonization of saint, judicial trial etc.
Divine law: refers to Gods creation, revelation and natural law.
Human Law: most of the humans are the enactments of the
church authority. They are Human law
