Typography

There are many different mastheads within R&B magazines, the masthead is an
integral part of a magazine and becomes a way of recognising the specific
magazine. It is also used to attract the audience towards the magazine and
represents the unique specific magazine branding. When researching the
competitors mastheads it became evident that they all shared the same
characteristic. These characteristics consisted of boldness and sharpness of the
text and also this idea of very contrasting colours to the background of the
magazine.

The XXL magazine demonstrates these characteristics with the very large
masthead and also using contrasting colours to catch the eye of the audience.
XXL also place the masthead on the left side of the page; this is also used by
many magazines as we read from left to right so it becomes easier for the
audience to recognise the logo first.

While researching my competitors typography I also found that magazines

mostly place their main themes on the right side of the page and sometimes left
side. XXL place their main themes on the right side of the page with the artists
on the left side. However Clash chose to provide main themes on both sides of
the magazine cover. These are features of typography that i can take into
consideration when creating my magazine so that i compete with the market.

In typography, a typeface is a set of one or more fonts each composed of glyphs

these share common design features. Each font of a typeface has a specific
weight, style, condensation, width, slant, italicization, ornamentation, and
designer or foundry. When considering my typeface I will look at conventional
features and consider my competitors. Some typefaces that I may use are serif
fonts or comic sans fonts, these are used throughout R&B magazines and are
used specifically in XXL.
