The Skeletal System

By Nancy Shin, Raina Japay, Leah Coale, and Joe Branch

Function #1 of the Skeletal System
The PVC pipe acted as the bone for our project. The tube with
the white string around it represented the calcium. We moved
the calcium in and out of the bone to show how the bone
stores calcium and how it releases calcium.
Calcium Storage
Our bodies absorb calcium from the food we eat through
the lining of the bowel. The calcium is stored in the bones. The body
controls the amount of calcium in the bloodstream very carefully.
When blood levels of calcium fall too low, the bones release calcium
into the blood. The amount of calcium absorbed from food in the
bowel also increases. And the kidneys get rid of less calcium
through the urine. If blood levels of calcium get too high, the
opposite happens.
Function #2
brain, red cup=blood,

There are 3 hormones in the body that play an important role in this complicated
control system. These are

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) made by the parathyroid glands

Vitamin D
Calcitonin

These hormones help to keep the correct balance of calcium in the blood.

If this balance is upset, the amount of calcium in our blood can get too high
(hyperglycaemia) and cause serious problems.
Function #3
We used elastic bands in our project to show how the muscles
in the muscular system move. The wood underneath the elastic
bands represent the bones underneath the muscles. The
reason why we used elastic bands was because they are
stretchy, so they are easier to move.
Function #4
The skeletal system provides support and protection. We used
balloons to represent skin, and jello to represent the brain.
Without a skeleton protecting the organs of the body,
everything inside would be completely damaged. But with the
skeleton, the organs are protected.
