If X is paracompact Hausdorff, then Y is paracompact Hausdorff as well.
First show that Y is T3 : X is T4 (from paracompactness and Hausdorff-
ness). Let y be a point in Y , and C a closed set not containing x. Then f 1 (x) and f 1 [C] are disjoint closed sets in X, so they have disjoint neighbourhoods O1 and O2 , such that f 1 (y) O1 and f 1 [C] O2 . Let U1 = Y \ f [X \ O1 ] and U2 = Y \f [X \O2 ], these are open as f is closed. Also y U1 and C U2 and they are disjoint (this is easy to check). so Y is T3 (which allows the use of the characterisation). Let (U) be an open cover of Y . Then (V) = {f 1 [U ] : U (U)} is an open cover of X, and as such has a locally finite closed refinement (W). Consider (U 0 ) = {f [W ] : W (W)}. This a closed cover of Y , obviously. [f is surjective and closed] Also, (U 0 ) refines (U) (let U 0 be from (U 0 ). So U 0 = f [W ], for some W in (W). this W is contined in some f 1 [U ], (some U (U)) and from this is follows that U 0 = f [W ] U , as required.) So (to use the characterisation nr 4 from above) we only need to show that (U 0 ) is locally finite. To this end: let y be in Y . Then f 1 (y) (being compact) has an open neighbourhood Vy that only intersects finitely many members of (W). (find one such neighbourhood for each x0 in f 1 (y) and take a finite subcover, Vy is its union). Now, let Oy = Y \ f [X \ Vy ], which (as usual) is open (f is closed), contains y, and has the property that f 1 [Oy ] Vy . Note that Oy intersects f [W ] (W from (W)) iff f 1 [Oy ] inter- sects W . And as f 1 [Oy ] Vy (which intersects only finitely many W from (W)) we see that Oy intersects only finitely many f [W ] from (U 0 ). So (U 0 ) is locally finite and we are done: we have shown Hence Y is paracompact and Hausdorff.
