Audience: Patients in Hospital
This paper was an analysis on an example of a visual communication method used in hospitals
written for ENGL 2001 Prof. Coco. The examples used were a pain scale, pictures showing how
to give an insulin injection, and a poster with ways to communicate on it. The paper was
intended to discuss the audience, message, and purpose of these communications,Picture It 2

‘One example of visual communication isthe pain scale. This universal pain scale is

something used in almost all hospitals universally. Doctors or nurses usually uses this scale to
assess their patient's pain, ‘The scale is numbered 1-10 and underneath the numbers are a strip of
faces. The faces are all making faces, each one worse than the last; this is also why the faces are
labeled from no pain to the worst possible pain. The audience for this communication tool is the
patients in the hospital. Usually when nurs
re checking vitals and the patient is experiencing
Pain, they will use the pain scale as a precaution almost before taking further steps. The pain
scale is meant for patient use basically, The purpose of the scale isto match the numbers with the
bain severity shown made bythe faces, This method js ficient fr patients who canna
communicate well, suchas disabled people or elders It can also be harder for children to
communicate well with doctors, so the visuals help out the kids. This helps them get a stronger
idea of how bad the pain they are experiencing is. Not only does this benefit the patient, but it
benefits the doctor as wel. It gives them a more accurate pain intensity due to the faces on the
ale. The message ofthis scale isto basically let the nurse or doctor in charge an understanding
of their patient's pain severity. This i prety important in making the next step for assessing their
Patient. IPthe pain intensity is high, they are most likely going to action more quickly thn if the
patient was feeling a mild pain, This scale benefits both the patient and the nurse or doctor. It
