While many of Marys lesson plans are too ambitious for me I am interested in how her teaching is very
informed by who her students are and things happening in their community and the larger world as well
as her ability to integrate social justice into early education curriculum

This journal article defined and described the basics of multi cultural education and why
it is important to expose learners to a variety of cultural perspectives and knowledge. In helped
me think about why it was important to find ways to incorporate a multi-cultural perspective into
a kindergarten study of folk tales stories and exploration.

I used this to think about how I wanted to teach concepts which includes self motivation and
direction on the part of the students , tactile sensory learning styles and having the students to
inventive work rather then copying an example or model.

This guide is useful because i explains how to teach extended units to young children and what
a kindergarten unit might look like and how to make connections to multiple subject areas
across themes on a kindergarten level

Describes state mandated educational goals for kindergarten education, I used it as a resource
to plan my unit goals

A book kids can explore independently and use as a visual resource to to start to think about
children around the world as well as potential visual during class lessons.

Humphrey, Paul People Everywhere, Steck-Vaughn Company 1995

This book talks about clothing around the world and doesn't follow into the usual stereotype of
portraying non western people in national costumes rather then things they actually wear on a
regular basis. It celebrates difference and provides maps of every place that is discussed tying
into our social studies map study

This book explores a kingdom figuring out a standard unit of measure and is a great
jumping o point of a measurement investigation

this book goes into concepts like scale that are too advanced for kindergarten but some pages
are useful for explaining globes versus flat maps and other simple concepts using the familiar
character of cat in the hat

a huge beautiful book that celebrates cultural differences and stresses commonalties among the
worlds peoples talks about diversity of language, foods customs etc.

this book explains the basic concept of maps and how we use them in a child friendly way
it explores different types of maps and moves from a local to global perspective using maps that
expand from a childs room to the whole world. The book also ties into multiculturalism by
exploring how everyone in the world has their own place on the map

a network for penpals in other countries for students I am hoping we can send a letter to
students in another country and get a response to cap offf our letter writing unit and give the
kids a sense of a multicultural world

cardinal direction song great for teaching kids the basic four directions. the kids love dance
videos so i might create a short dance so they can point to the different directions

(supports my science unit on the use of compasses and cardinal directions)
