THE TEACHING OF GREEK FOLK DANCE IN THE MODERN

EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT

Abstract
In the last decades the teaching of Greek folk dance has taken place through the
teacher-centric method where a stereotyped and standardized educational
process is adopted. On the other hand, in the modern educational context there is
a demand for the use of creative learning methods that focus on the student.
Does this mean the end of the Greek folk dance in education? This question
formulates the content of this paper. In particular, this study aims to examine the
compatibility of the teaching of Greek folk dance in the modern educational
context. Thus, the nature of Greek folk dance is determined, its child-centered
learning method is defined, while the profile of the modern educational context in

the case of the selective educational programmes is described. Then the
compatibility of Greek folk dance and modern educational context is examined. It
is proved that the nature, but also the child-centered teaching method of Greek
folk dance, fulfill the prerequisites for a creative child-centered learning, as
demanded by the modern educational context.
