Time Tunnel Local Museum
Location: Brinchang

The Time Tunnel is billed as "The Local Museum", the first memorabilia museum in
Malaysia. Opened since February 2007, it's the brainchild of 45-year-old See Kok
Shan, an avid collector who believes that all that's old is gold.

See grew up in Cameron Highlands. So in addition to what he buys, he also has lots of
interesting stuff about the resort town, especially old pictures. There's a comparison
picture of the Convent Primary School building in Tanah Rata and one dating back to
the 1950s when it served as the British Military Hospital. According to a framed
handwritten note, it used to be a boarding school for European children from 1935 to
1941, before the Japanese Occupation. He even has a blown-up picture of P.Ramlee's
old identity card.

There are two exhibition levels in Time Tunnel. Hop up a short flight of steps and
you'd find yourself along a narrow ledge with exhibits on the floor, on tables and on
7
shelves at eye-level.
"This is one of the most popular sections, especially with old aunties," says See,
chuckling as he recalls how an old woman, mesmerised and lost in her own memories
of when she was a child herself, just stood there for the longest time. This is the
kitchen section with a display of an old makeshift stove as well as charcoal stoves,
kerosene stoves, charcoal iron, grinding stones, old tiffin carriers and meat-safes with
wire-netting on the doors.
"Visitors, especially those aged 50 and above, are thrilled to see all these things from
their childhood," says See. "notice that Singaporeans in particular, love the place and
theyd bring their children and grandchildren and point out to them all the exhibits."

Agro Technology Park in MARDI

Location: Tanah Rata
The agrotechnology park is divided into six main areas: the English Garden, Herb
Garden, Orchid Garden, Rose Garden, research centre and an information centre,
where tourists can also buy souvenirs. Mardi's Agrotechnology Park is home to 40
varieties of roses, 10 strawberries, 100 citrus fruits, at least six types of anthuriums,
four varieties of apples, and pears and persimmons.

The Park is home to 40 varieties of roses, 10 strawberries, 100 citrus fruits, at least
six types of anthuriums, four varieties of apples and pears as well as persimmons.
The RM8 million 42-hectare park has six areas C Rose, orchid, English, Herb and
Orchid Gardens and a research and information centre where tourists can also buy
souvenirs.

The Park was launched on June 14. The brainchild of Malaysian Research and
Development Institute (MARDI), the Park received 100,000 visitors annually. The idea
to turn the former research station opened in 1926 by the British to an
agrotechnology park came from the Agriculture Minister Datuk Dr Effendi Norwawi
three years ago. The British handed over the park to MARDI some 22 years ago.

The Park is actually MARDI's oldest research station in the country and since
Cameron Highland is a popular tourist destination, MARDI has followed through on
the idea to turn it into an Agrotechnology Park.

Butterfly Farm
The Butterfly Farm itself is not really that big, it does not have a huge collection of
living butterflies, mainly observed the Rajah Brookes (Trogonoptera brookiana
albescens), the Malaysian National "Bird" and some smaller species. The interesting
things of the farm are a quite good collection of beetles that are on display; they had
on display, Cheirotonus arnaudi, Odontolabis femoralis femoralis, and some other

14
interesting species. It is an interesting trip to visit the butterfly farm and the butterfly
garden, both are on the same road. It is not too far away from Tanah Rata, about 20
km, and easy accessible via bus or taxi. Entrance fee is very cheap, about one Euro.
If you come to the Camerons, check the farm out, it is easier to see Trogonoptera
there than anywhere else in the wild.

The Butterfly Garden stocks a variety of insects, reptiles, mammals and birds housed
on a landscaped garden with festoons of orchids, ferns, vines and other greenery.
Another attached garden is filled with flowers such as roses and hibiscus with
streams of Rajah Brooke butterflies. If coming from Brinchang town, the Butterfly
Garden is located at right after the Butterfly Farm, so don't get confused. If coming
from Simpang Pulai, then the Butterfly Garden will be the first on your left.
19
Butterflies will usually be soaring everywhere, but this may be seasonal. As the
butterflies need to be restocked every week due to their short lifespan (14 days after
metamorphosis), there are times when the butterflies can be few. Fortunately, the
butterflies are not the only thing to look at. Glass enclosures along the pathway
house creatures such as snakes, lizards, insects and furry rodents.
