ABSTRAC

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease caused by


chronic inflammatory at the respiratory tract because of gas inhalation and
hazards particulate. Inflammatory process in COPD not only takes place in the
lungs, but also systematically describes the occurrence of disease progression.
The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between stage of COPD and
muscle wasting in patients with COPD. This study uses observational analytic
method with cross sectional design. The sample of this study were patients seeking
treatment in Poli Paru RSUDZA as much as 30 respondents taken by accindental
sampling from December 2015 to January 2016. The data were collected by
measuring the left upper arm circumference to assess muscle mass in patients
with COPD. The analysis used is the Spearman test. The results of study showed
that patients with COPD is stage I (10%), stage II (33,3%), stage III (53,4%) and
stage IV (3,3%). The results of upper arm circumference showed that status
muscle mass with range 51-60% is 27%, 61-70% is 33%, 71-80% is 33% and 81-
89% is 7%. The results of the data analysis with Spearman's test showed that the
p value = 0.002 and r = 0.546. It is concluded that there is a correlation between
stage of COPD and muscle wasting in Poli Paru RSUDZA Banda Aceh.
