Student Mistreatment

Student Mistreatment encompasses ANY form of

mistreatment; it is not limited to sexual or discriminatory
harassment.
Student mistreatment of ANY TYPE will not be tolerated.
Student mistreatment is contrary to the values, respect,
civility, and community as set forth in the University's
Statement of Ethical Principles. Medical students who
experience mistreatment themselves or observe other
students experiencing possible mistreatment are expected
and encouraged to follow the following reporting process.
Student Mistreatment

The recommended initial step is for students to discuss the incident of mistreatment with their Society Small Group
Advisor.
If the mistreatment involves sexual misconduct, the society advisor is required to report all such conduct to the
appropriate university official.
The Society Advisor may also report other instances of student mistreatment to appropriate school or university
officials.
Students may choose to seek resolution through several other pathways. Any or all of the following persons may be
contacted in seeking guidance to resolve an incident of experienced or observed mistreatment:
1. A different Small Group Advisor
2. The Director of the Society System: Dr. Mary Jo Lechowicz
3. One of the Deans of the School of Medicine
4. The Executive Associate Dean for Medical Education

Reaching Out for Help

Students are often profoundly touched by the patients and families

they meet and by the experiences they have during the clinical
clerkships
All students are encouraged to reach out to support systems
(clerkship directors, small group advisors, others) to process clinical
experiences
Students who become emotionally overwhelmed or are struggling for
personal reasons with one of their rotations should definitely reach
out for help earlier rather than later
Students should reach out for help at any time regardless of what
the needs may be
Exposures

Always observe Standard Precautions (Universal Precautions).

If you have an exposure to blood or other body fluids (e.g., needle stick, cut),
immediately clean the wound with soap and water.
Exposed oral and nasal mucosa should be decontaminated by vigorously flushing
with water. Exposed eyes should be irrigated with clean water or sterile saline.
Follow the protocol of the hospital in which the incident occurred to the fullest
including all follow-up (through the hospitals Employee Health Service).
If prophylactic medications are indicated, it is recommended they be initiated as
soon as possible after the exposure, ideally within two hours.
If you are uncertain of the procedures for reporting and obtaining care at the facility
where your exposure occurred, call the Woodruff Health Sciences (WHSC)
Needlestick Hotline for assistance at 404-727-4736.
