Statistics

Problem:
The attendance clerk at Fountain View High school recorded the number of students that were
late to their 1st period during 25 consecutive school days.
Data:
25, 32, 50, 54, 67, 70, 70, 70, 81, 86, 89, 89, 96, 96, 96, 97, 100, 102, 104, 104, 104, 104, 107,
107, 115

Mode: In order to find the mode you will need to look at the data and look for the number that is
repeated more frequently. In this case 104 would your mode because it is repeated 4 times.
Answer: 140

Median: In order to find the median you will need to first arrange the numbers from least to
greatest. Next, you will need to start crossing out the numbers. You will need to start with the
outside numbers making your way to the middle. It is very important that you cross out the same
amount of numbers on both sides until have one or two numbers left.
As shown below (in this case there is only one number left):
25, 32, 50, 54, 67, 70, 70, 70, 81, 86, 89, 89, 96, 96, 96, 97, 100, 102, 104, 104, 104, 104, 107, 107, 115

Answer: 96

Mean: In order to find the mean you will need to add all the data together and then divide by the
amount of data you collected. In this case you will add the following numbers.
25, 32, 50, 54, 67, 70, 70, 70, 81, 86, 89, 89, 96, 96, 96, 97, 100, 102, 104, 104, 104, 104, 107,
107, 115 = 2115
Then you will divide the total by the amount of data you collected. In this case you collected data
from 25 days, so you will need to divide by 25 and that will give you the mean.
211525= 84.6
Answer: 84.6
One Standard Deviation Away from the mean: You will need to multiply standard deviation
times two.
24.12813*2= 48.25626

Two Standard Deviations away from the mean: You will need to multiply one standard
deviation times two.
48.25626*2= 96.51252

Three Standard Deviations: You will need to multiply two standard deviation by two.
96.51252*2= 193.02504

The values of my data that comprise all these three deviations are the following:
25, 32, 50, 54, 67, 70, 70, 70, 81, 86, 89, 89, 96, 96, 96, 97, 100, 102, 104, 104, 104, 104, 107,
107, 115
I had to use all of my values in order to find the mean. I then subtracted the mean from each of
my values and squared them. Next, I added all the values after being squared and I divided the
sum by (n-1) in order to get my variance. I then found the square root of the variance to get my
Standard deviation.
