Physical Education Brainstorming

Date 3/3/17
Time: 9:30 9:45 & 11:15 11:30
Participants: Marc L & Mike M

TOPIC: Moving fitness testing results to an online tracker.

We broke down our brainstorming into two sessions. In session one, I updated my co-worker on the
steps of the design process since we last met to do an interview. After, we talked about about the
challenges of fitness scores and the importance of keeping accurate information. In session two, we
discussed the pros and cons of having the database online and what platform we should use to make it
an easy transition.

Why fitness scores might not be accurate

students do not try their hardest every time
students might be sick or tired
students might do the tests incorrectly
students might interpret scores incorrectly
students lie about their scores

Can we put things in place to make sure some of these reasons are eliminated
teacher can score the fitness test (ie.. flexed arm hang)
two students can count for scoring (ie.. sit up test)
Cannot control sick/tired or not trying their best

Would there be any incorrect scores on a computer?

If students are absent, would their scores be 0, making averages skewed lower
Human error, entering 47 instead of 17
New students or students leaving the district

Break from brainstorming (at this time we had two classes, we went back to having our brainstorming
session during our next break)

How might we benefit from having these results on a computer

have a safe place to score results
other teachers can access results
computer will be able to compute data for averages

What systems are available

Microsoft Excel
Google Sheets
Another software program?

What are some pros/cons of Microsoft Excel?

PROS
more features available
all district computers have excel installed
can be sent via email to other school/teachers
CONS
It is not on a cloud
You need to save and send it to everyone with latest version of tracker
Only one person can work on document at a time

What are some pros/cons of Google Sheets

PROS
Document is saved on a cloud so each entry is saved automatically
Users can log in at the same time to enter their own scores
Millbury Public Schools is a Google based district.
CONS
Is sometimes hard to use/format
Don't have any experience using the drive

How might we get teachers experience in using the drive?

Professional Development opportunities
Having Mentors work with teachers on how to use the drive
Watch how to videos on youtube
Trial & error
