Introduction

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of

absenteeism on SHS Students on academic performance and its effect. The

major problem faced by schools across the country is student absenteeism.

Although the problem is pervasive in SHS Students, the attention focused on

this issue has been inadequate. The aim of this paper is to determine the

absenteeism and its effect on the academic performance of selected SHS

students.

Absent from class may affect their qualification to live in campus.

Based on merit, student who are always absent from class may not allowed

to live in campus. College state that the student absenteeism does not like to

study in campus. Students do not respond to mandatory attendance to

teaching assistant sections and homework performance. The sensitivity of

the attendance coefficient to the exclusion from the data set of students with

atypically low levels of attendance.

Absenteeism

Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from

a duty or obligation. Traditionally, absenteeism has been viewed as an

indicator of poor individual performance, as well as a breach of an implicit

contract between employee and employer; it was seen as a management

problem, and framed in economic or quasi-economic terms. More recent

scholarship seeks to understand absenteeism as an indicator of

psychological, medical, or social adjustment to work.

Absenteeism also likely to affects students propensity to attend

class leading to an upward bias in estimates of effect of attendance on

performance obtained from regression analysis. A commonly encountered

problem in the literature is difficulty in disentangling the causal effect of

class attendance from unobserved factors such as students intrinsic

motivation or interest.

School absenteeism is an alarming problem for administrators,

teachers, parents, society in general, and students in particular. Unaccepted

absences have a negative effect on peer relationships, which can cause

further absences. According to Malcolm, Wilson, Davidson and Kirk (2003)

teachers identified the effects of absenteeism on children as:

Academic under-achievement.
Difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom and loss of

confidence.

Prolonged absence can have deleterious effects for the child in later

life.

Students who are absent from school are at the greatest risk of

dropping out of school early.

Absenteeism also affects the teachers ability to present class work in a

sequential and organized way. This can have an effect on the progress of all

the students in the class.

Causes of Absenteeism and Tardiness among Students

Punctuality and regular attendance are essential for the proper

operation of each year level in the school. These important factors are taken

into consideration for the upliftment of learning outcomes among the

students in the school. Maybe due to problems or during the time of

excessive absenteeism and or tardiness may result in disciplinary action.

Developing the habit of being early in classes, meetings, programs and

conference can give something that is worthy in time. Students should be

made to realize that tardiness can totally destroy their time and

concentration. Almost one half of the students can no longer attend the flag

ceremony, though attendance is a must. The flag ceremony is done during

Monday to Friday and is usually followed by announcement and updates. And

as a result of being tardy, many of the students miss the announcements.

When a student comes to school late, it causes him/her to get off to bad start

and disrupts the classroom.

These behaviors are barometer indicating the likehood of students

success. Many school interventions to improve student performances use

tardiness and absences as indicators to success or failure of the intervention.

Perhaps not knowing about or trusting this model and

underestimating the power of grades to predict school behavior, some

schools try to tackle the problem of tardiness and absences head-on.

Chronically tardy students might get administrative detention. Schools

create policies intended to reduce absences or create more accurate tracking

system. Many researchers have developed checklist of deviant school

behaviors which are associated with poor school performance. Irregular

attendance and frequent tardiness were two of the five drop out indicators.

Student absenteeism is a major concern for elementary and secondary

school educators. The effects of absenteeism show that it hurts both

students' academic achievement and the school, where it can cause time

loss and morale problems. Absenteeism has many causes and effects.
The causes of absenteeism of students are according to were the

following; Lack of subject interest, lack of personal interest in studies,

available opportunities for entertainment like malls, movie halls etc., the

mental capacity of a students does not match with the course opted, Too

much pamperness from family, the poor teaching skills of a teacher also

keep away student from the school, lack of confidence ,ragging also cause

absenteeism , lack of allied activities also causes absenteeism like no sports

program, no fresher or farewell parties ,no annual day celebration etc, poor

food of canteen may also be considered as one of the reasons for

absenteeism and poor infrastructure facility in school such as no place in a

library to sit is also one of the reason of absenteeism.

Excess of homework and sometimes fear from examination keep away

students from school. Preparation for the participation in TV shows in dance

musical or acting,G.K. contest programs also increase the percentage of

absenteeism. Preparation for examination causes absenteeism. Over

expectation of parents also deteriorate the attendance of a student when

she/he is unable to cope with parent nature of making comparison among

their own children of with the friends of their child. Too much socialization

causes absenteeism. It mostly happens during teen age and college when

the students form a group to freak out. When more than desired facilities are

provided by parents such as CAR, Mobiles, and High Amount of Money as

Pocket Money the student start enjoying those facilities and become absent.

Inferiority complex within student causes absenteeism.

Academic Performance

Academic achievement or (academic) performance is the

outcome of education the extent to which a student, teacher or institution

has achieved their educational goals. Academic achievement is commonly

measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general

agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important

procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such

as facts.

Individual differences in academic performance have been linked

to differences in intelligence and personality. Students with higher mental

ability as demonstrated by IQ tests and those who are higher

in conscientiousness (linked to effort and achievement motivation) tend to

achieve highly in academic settings. A recent meta-analysis suggested that

mental curiosity (as measured by typical intellectual engagement) has an

important influence on academic achievement in addition to intelligence and

conscientiousness. Children's semi-structured home learning environment

transitions into a more structured learning environment when children start

first grade. Early academic achievement enhances later academic

achievement.

Parent's academic socialization is a term describing the way

parents influence students' academic achievement by shaping students'

skills, behaviors and attitudes towards school. Parents influence students

through the environment and discourse parents have with their

children. Academic socialization can be influenced by parents' socio-

economic status. Highly educated parents tend to have more stimulating

learning environments. Further, recent research indicates that the

relationship quality with parents will influence the development of academic

self-efficacy among adolescent-aged children, which will in turn affect their

academic performance.

With todays youth spending a majority of their afterschool time

in organized activities, it is important to understand the influence that these

activities can have on academic achievement. Schools often offer a variety of

extracurricular activities for todays students. In order to encompass all

students, these activities can often range from theater rehearsal to soccer

practice. These extracurricular activities have a positive relationship with

academic performance (Broh, 2002; Mahoney, Larson, Ecce, & Lord, 2005).

All students are required to maintain a satisfactory academic

record and meet the obligations of the courses in which they are enrolled.
Failure to do so will be dealt with as the Faculty and its designated Boards

shall determine. In all cases, midyear grades in full year courses will be

considered along with all other grades in the calculations for minimum

requirements and satisfactory records. One of the most annoying

experiences of a teacher is that when students are absent. They are already

prepared there lesson plans with the objective of 100% of the class will learn

from the days classroom activities, and it is most satisfying when all

students are present on that day and the days there after to ensure

maximum learning. Sadly, it is very difficult to achieve perfect attendance.

No matter how interesting and well-prepared their lessons and teaching

materials are, there are bound to be students who miss out on the days

activitieswillingly or unwillingly.

Conclusion

The review of literature in this topic has concentrated

largely on absenteeism: its effect on the academic performance of selected

SHS students. Academic performance is the outcome of education. It is the

extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their

educational goals. And the aim of this paper is to determine the effect of

absenteeism on the academic performance of selected SHS students. The

paper explains that Academic performance is the outcome of education. This

study also shows the relation of academic performance to the capacities of

students performance.
