Description ‘The valve mechanism consists of a camshaft, rocker arms, intake and exhaust valves and their related parts and ishoused within the cam case. Driven from the crankshaft through a loop of cam chain, thé cemsheft moyes the valves through the rocker arms. ‘Thie shalt is supported at two places and runs at 1/2 the crankshaft speed. ‘The working suriaces of the cams are carehardened by softnitriding (CLN) process to provide a greater wear resistance. The eamside ends of the rocker arms are hard-feced with a special alloy. The valves are stellitefaced and their seats are made of a hestresistant steel to minimize valve com- poueat wear. If aot, a shock may be expected to the touch. (Fig. 6-20) + Tho condenser functions to hold electricity temporasily so ‘hat when the point is opened, the current does not spark. If the internal insulation is defective or the capacity it insaficient, the secondary voltage is lowered, the plug sparking is weakened. and the ignition becomes defective 5. Spark Plug A, Description The standard spark plug used is the NGK B-8ES. The rain parts of the spark plug are the electrodes, insuletor and the plag body. It caa withstand high temperature and the insulation resistance value is high at high temperature, leak ‘proof and can withstand sudden chenges in temperature and physical property is strong agniast shock. (Fig. 6-21) Further, spark plug must be comparable with the heat characteristics of the engine, however, it is impossible to produce « plug which con be used universally. In ancther ‘word, during the operation, if the temperature of the electrode is too low, carbon or oil will form on the electrode and will cause misfiring of the plug, therefore, the tempersture of the electrode must be high enough to prevent the fouling of the plug, This i called the self clesning temperature and it approximately 450~000°C (@42~1112"F). However, if the temperature becomes too high the electrocie will be heated to the point that it will cause the fuel mixture to ignite and result in pre-ignition. This temperature is called pre-ignition temperature and is about 750~850°C (382~1562°F), Be ‘cause of this, the spark plug should be selected so that the heat rating is higher than the self cleaning temperature but lower than the pre-ignition temperature, To designate the heat characteristics, the term heat range refers to the operating condition of the plug. The higher ‘umber designation of the plug is use for high speed driving or when normally bearing a heavy loed. Conversely, when the plags with the smaller number indicate that it i @ ot ‘ype lug. Asan example, if there is a tendency for the engine to overheat caused by burning of the electrodes or pre.ignition, while using the NG& 7ES plugs, the spark plugs should be replaced with plugs of « higher heat range such as the B-SES, ‘On the other hend if the plugs appear to be sooty, replace the spark plugs with those of a lower heat range ‘such as the BEE, “The standard NGK B-BES spark plug has a thread dis. meter of 14mm and a resch of 19 mim (0.784 in), Fig, 6-24. Sooty condition (dry) B, Removal 1. Remove the high tension cord from the spark plug. 2. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug wrench. ©. Inspection 1, Spark plugs should be periodically inspected. If « spark lug is used for # long period of time, the electrode gradually burns and the sparking efficiency lowers The epark plug efficiency can be detected with a spark plug ene.” Inspect the sparking contin, by changing the tester intemal pressure, with the rated voltage epplied. 2, Ibis best to use « spark plug cleaner for cleaning, how. ever, when cleans is not avaiable, scrap with a piece of wire or needle, end wash with gasoline end wipe off with a dry rag. For example, to charge three 12V batteries, the charger must have an ourpat voltage in excess of 16, (15 (15)+16 (15)+16 (15) or 48 (or 45) volts, 4. Charging A fally discharged battery will require charging rete that is 125 higher than the normal charge rate of the battery. ‘As an cxample, © AH battery wil require 15AH charging rate (IZAHX125=15AH), There is a defiaite relationship between the charging cucrent and the charg- ing time. This is shown in Fig. 6-49, The charging curreat should not be greater than three times the 10, hours curreat rate, (For a 12AH battery, L2Ax3= 3.54), i ‘As the battery approaches the full charge condition, gas tull be released from the electrolyie. Further, quick charging method should thot be frequently used. However, whoa it io inevitable aad quick charging must be performed, the following itome should be observed. For quick charging a 12AH battery, use the charging current cate of 128. A batiery which is 90% discharged, approximately 30 minutes should be adequate to charge the battery. However, if duriag the charging process the electrolyte temperature should rise above 50°C (122°F), the charging should be temporarily stopped or the charging current rate reduced. + Other precaution If the electrolyte level falls during charging, ro6ll with distilled water to the upper level mark, = Tnflammable bydrogen gas is discharged from the cells, therefore, do not charge batteries near aay open fr. + After charging, add distilled or battery water to the cells to bring the electrolyte to the upper mark Tighten cell caps firmly and wash off with clean water if any acid spilled + The battery is now ready for installation.
