I served as Mrs. ‘Yamada’s university supervisor for the fall 2016 semester during her student teaching in a 4" grade classroom at Waialae Elementary Public Charter School. Throughout my observations of Mrs. Yamada I was sincerely impressed with her skilled behavioral redirection techniques, outstanding planning and organization, and notable investment in every individual child's success. Mrs. Yamada not only delivered lessons that incorporated meaningful peer-to-peer interaction, but she also facilitated metacognitive thinking throughout the entire work period. Students were highly productive and engaged due to her clear explanations and expectations. Mrs. Yamada assumes a highly active, but not overpowering ‘hing approach in which she guides students to arrive at solutions collaboratively. In addition to her astute attention to detail and command of classroom management, Mrs. Yamada is highly committed to improving outcomes for all students, She circulated the classroom masterfully, identifying struggling students and off task students much like a veteran teacher. When she noticed a particular student with more eccentric and challenging behaviors. she took the time to sit down with him individually to inquire about his learning preferences in order to build a supportive classroom environment and experience for him. This approach demonstrates her belief that every child has the potential to succeed with the right accommodations and modifications.
