ChE-506: Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

M.Sc. Chemical Engineering 2017 Session

Solve the following numerical Problems

1. Starting with the following definition of Cp and Cv

and

(a) Show that the Cp-Cv can be expressed as a function of PVT properties only. (b) Using the result of Part
a, show that the Cp-Cv = R for an ideal gas.

2. Evaluate the following partial derivatives as a function of P, V, T, their partial derivatives and Cp
(a)
(b)

3. A piston-cylinder assembly contains 2 mol of a gas at 5 bar and 350 K. As a result of irreversible
operations 3.5 kJ of work is done on the system, the final pressure and temperature being 25 bar
and 400 K, respectively. Calculate the heat interaction of the gas with the surroundings.
The gas obeys following EOS
P (V b) = RT
Where b = 4 x 10-5 m3/mol
The heat capacity at constant pressure is given as a function of temperature as
Cp = 8.314 + 0.108T
Where Cp is in J/mol.K and Temperature in K.

4. Evaluate the following expressions , , , for a fluid which obeys

the following equation of State
b) = RT
Also find out U, S, H, G, A for an isothermal change

5. Derive a relation for the internal energy change as a gas that obeys the van der waals equation of
state. Assume that in the range of interest Cv varies according to the relation Cv = c1 + c2T. where
c1 and c2 are constants
