Popular Uprising

While the National Assembly was meeting the


people of Paris and the Peasants moved the
revolution in a more radical direction.

They were hopping that changes would occur


quickly to help them meet their basic needs.

Change did not come quickly.

People feared that the King would move to


crush the revolution.

July 14, 1789 a paris crowd stormed the
Bastille, a huge prison fortress in Paris. They
saw the Bastille as a symbol of the injustice of
the Old Regime.

This led to rebellion in the country side.


Peasants turned on their landlords, destroyed
tax records and swore to never again pay
feudal dues.

The National Assembly had to act and act
fast.

And during one evening wrote a constitution


at last.

Now a Noble taxes would pay

And all of their privileges were taken away

All male citizens for government could run

All men were deemed equal! Now isn’t that


fun?

The Declaration of the Rights of man laid


down each of these rights.

But all of this work didn’t stop all the fights.

People were hungry people were sick

And they didn’t believe all this talking would


stick.

They marched on Versailles and captured the


King.

And put him on horse back for Paris to bring.

They draped him with the Revolutions Blue,


White and Red.

It was becoming quite clear that he might


soon loose his head

Religious Reforms
The Revolution brought about change for the
church.

Allowing freedom to worship was the change


that came first.

The church lost its privilege their land was


taken and sold

The government need the money to pay off


debts owed

Constitution of 1791
After much work the constitution was
completed and done

A Limited Monarchy was the system that


won.

An elected assembly was put into place

And the old system of classes was gone and


erased.

Non-rhyming elements of
constitution of 1791
Established a system of separation of powers.

Head of the executive branch was the king. The


legislature made the laws. The King could veto the
law. However, the legislature could over ride the
veto.

System of courts was set up as the judicial branch.

Old appointed officials in different regions were


replaced with new elected officials.

Response to the first stage of the Revolution.

Most people were not pleased they thought


the constitution had flaws.

They wanted the King out not vetoing laws.

Some wanted a Republic they wanted all


power.

Meanwhile most nobles fled or they coward.

The King tried to run to get out of town.

But they caught him quite quickly and sat


him right down.

And forced him to sign and accept his power


now small

The King did not like this, didn’t like this at


all

Within the Assembly all was not right

Disagreements were serious and plainly in


sight.

Some were happy with the reforms that were


made.

But the hopes the revolution was over were


starting to Fade.
