Term End Examination - November 2014

Course : MEE301 - Dynamics of Machinery Slot : B1+TB1

Class NBR : 4440 / 4441 / 4442 / 5439
Time : Three Hours [Link]

Note :
i) Draw graphical representations neatly and use suitable scale
ii) Notations used should be abbreviated

PART A (5 X 4 = 20 Marks)
Answer ALL Questions

1. A punching press is required to punch 30 mm diameter holes in a plate of 20 mm

thickness at the rate of 20 holes per minute. It requires 6 N-m of energy/mm2 of sheared
area. If punching takes place in 1/10th of a second and the speed of the flywheel varies
from 160 to 140 rpm, determine the mass of the flywheel having radius of gyration 1 m.
2. Three masses are attached to a shaft as follows: 10 kg at 90 mm radius; 15 kg at 120 mm
radius and 9 kg at 150 mm radius. The masses are to be arranged so that the shaft is in
static balance. Determine the angular position of masses relative to 10 kg mass. All the
masses are in the same plane.
3. Describe Critical damping coefficient and damping ratio.

4. A steel bar 25 mm wide and 50 mm deep is freely supported at two points of meter apart
and carries a mass of 200 kg mid-way between them. Find the frequency of the natural
transverse vibrations, neglecting the mass of the bar. Take E = 28 105 bar. What will
be the frequency of vibration, if any additional mass of 200 kg is distributed uniformly
along the length of the shaft?
5. Explain gyroscopic effect on air plane.

PART B (5 X 16 = 80 Marks)
Answer any FIVE Questions
6. During forward stroke of the piston of the double acting steam engine, the turning
moment has the maximum value of 1960 N-m when the crank makes an angle of 80
with the I.D.C. During the backward stroke, the maximum turning moment is 1470 N-m
when the crank makes 80 with the outer dead centre. The turning moment diagram for
the engine may be assumed to be represented by two triangles.
If the crank moves 100 rpm and radius of gyration of flywheel is 1.75 m,
find the coefficient of fluctuation of energy and the mass of the flywheel to keep the
speed 0.75% of the mean speed. Also determine the crank angles at which the speed
has its minimum and maximum values.

7. A 3 m long shaft carries three pulleys two at its two ends and third at the mid-point.
The two end pulleys have mass of 50 kg and 25 kg and their centre of gravity are 20 mm
and 15 mm respectively from the axis of the shaft. The middle pulley mass is 60 kg and
its centre of gravity is 20 mm from the shaft axis. The pulleys are so keyed to the shaft
that the assembly is in static balance. The shaft rotates at 340 rpm in two bearings
2 m apart with equal overhang on either side. Determine:
a. Relative angular positions of the pulleys, and
b. Dynamic forces produced on the bearings.

8. A machine of mass 75 kg is mounted on springs of stiffness 12 105 N/m and with an

assumed damping factor of 0.2. A piston within the machine of mass 2 kg has a
reciprocating motion with a stroke of 80 mm and a speed of 3000 cycles/min.
Assuming the motion to be simple harmonic, find:
(a) The amplitude of motion of the machine,
(b) Its phase angle with respect to the exciting force,
(c) The force transmitted to the foundation,
(d) The phase angle of transmitted force with respect to the exciting force, and
(e) The phase lag of the transmitted force with respect to the applied force.

9. A vertical shaft 30 mm diameter and 1 m long is mounted in long bearings and carries a
pulley of mass 10 kg midway between the bearings. The centre of pulley is 0.5 mm from
the axis of the shaft. Find
(a) The whirling speed, and
(b) The bending stress in the shaft, when it is rotating at 2000 rpm.
Neglect the mass of the shaft and take Youngs modulus of the material of the shaft as
200 GN/m2.

10. The lengths of the upper and lower arms of a porter governor are 200 mm and 250 mm
respectively. Both the arms are pivoted on the axis of rotation. The central load is 150 N,
the weight of each ball is 20 N and the friction of the sleeve together with the resistance
of the operating gear is equivalent to a force of 30 N at the sleeve. If the limiting
inclinations of the upper arms to the vertical are 30 and 40, taking friction into
account, find the range of speed of the governor.

11. a) A body of mass of 50 kg is supported by an elastic structure of stiffness 10 kN/m. [10]

The motion of the body is controlled by a dashpot such that the amplitude of
vibration decreases to one-tenth of its original value after two complete vibrations.
Determine:
(i) Damping ratio,
(ii) Damping force at 1 m/s, and
(iii) Natural frequency of vibration.
b) The flywheel of an engine driving a dynamo has mass of 200 kg and has a radius of [6]
gyration of 30 cm. The shaft at the flywheel end has an effective length of 25 cm and
is 5 cm diameter. The armature mass is 225 kg and has a radius of gyration of
25.5 cm. The dynamo shaft has a diameter of 4.375 cm and an equivalent length of
20 cm. Neglecting the inertia of the shaft and coupling, calculate the frequency of the
torsional vibrations and position of node. The modulus of rigidity for the shaft
material is 80 GN/m2.
