The Carnac Stones

What are the Carnac Stones?

The Carnac stones are a dense collection of prehistoric sites
around the French village of Carnac.

There are over 3,000 standing stones, the largest such

collection in the world, but their purpose has never been
discovered.
About the stones
There are 12 converging rows of standing stone stretching
more than a kilometer with the remains of a stone circle at
either end.

The largest stones are around 4m high at the western end

and become smaller reaching around 0.6m.
History of the Carnac stones
Its was thought that the stone were erected during the
Neolithic period which lasted 4500BC until 2000BC.

But archaeologists have had a hard time finding accurate

dates since little material has been found that could be used
for radiocarbon dating.
Theories
Local myth states that a Roman legion was on the march
when wizard Merlin turned them into stone.

One researcher thought that it was an elaborate earthquake

detector.

Another theory is that the stones were erected by ancient

people to honor their ancestors.

The stones were also thought to be made to communicate

with extraterrestrial.
