Why Listen?
Music Listening Journal
Grades 5-8
To enjoy it: Music listening is such an important part of education;
not simply hearing the music, but enjoying, believing and internalizing it.
It is my personal hope that they will connect with what they hear, have
positive musical experiences, and make lasting impressions in their daily
lives.
To improve music vocabulary and discussion skills: Each month
focuses on one specific element of music. The listening questions are
designed to emphasize this element during this month. You will see a few
questions repeated throughout the month, as to focus each answer on
that months element. In the future, you will see that question return
although not as often.
To expose students to a variety of cultures, eras, and styles: Each
month focuses on a specific musical era, style, or genre. Again you will
see questions and selections guided towards a specific genre of music.
Not all pieces for the month will fit this genre as a way to expose
students to as many styles as possible.

Ive had many teachers

music listening in their
classrooms. Many
students have no
vocabulary for music and
sometimes it can be like
pulling teeth to get
thoughtful responses. As
a result, Ive digitized my
favorite bulletin board
that includes many ideas
and questions for
students to reflect on
while they listen. Just

How This Lesson Works
These listening lessons are meant as six mini-lessons, lasting
around 10 minutes. I use these as a bell ringer activity for
students at the beginning of class one day each week. They can
also be combined for a longer listening lesson, and would be great
for a sub!

Sound files are NOT included with this lesson, however each
slide includes a link to a Safe Share video. These videos are all
school appropriate, however you will have internet to stream the
video. Generally, I use my own recordings, but the video clips are
excellent quality as well.

The worksheets and slides are designed to have two short


answer questions and one complete sentence answer (always #3.)
I encourage students to spend the most time on question number
three as a way of internalizing each piece. It is my hope that they
will create a personal connection with the music and a lasting
memory.

Each month includes a focus on one musical element and one


musical genre. Mostly, the songs and questions point this direction
although you will see pieces included that are outside of that
specific genre.

PowerPoint must be in presentation mode for the links to


work. All text in the PowerPoint is editable, and blank slides
are included for you to add or make improvements.
