COM presents:

Registration: November 01 to December 16 | Deadline 16 December 2016 | Cash prize: 2000 |

Competition

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, after
Mercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often referred to as the Red Planet because
the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Mars is a terrestrial planet
with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the
Moon and the valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth.

Several plans for a human mission to Mars have been proposed throughout the 20th century
and into the 21st century, but no active plan has an arrival date sooner than the 2020s. SpaceX
founder Elon Musk presented a plan in September 2016 to, optimistically, launch space tourists to
Mars in 2024 at an estimated development cost of US$10 billion.

The whole world is watching to Mars for future residential and exploration missions.

MARS - PRESENTATION

Mars is approximately half the diameter of Earth with a surface area only slightly less than
the total area of Earths dry land. Mars is less dense than Earth, having about 15% of Earths
volume and 11% of Earths mass, resulting in about 38% of Earths surface gravity. The red-orange
appearance of the Martian surface is caused by iron oxide, or rust. It can look like butterscotch,
and other common surface colors include golden, brown, tan, and greenish, depending on the
minerals present.

Mars is a terrestrial planet that consists of minerals containing silicon and oxygen, metals,
and other elements that typically make up rock. The surface of Mars is primarily composed of
tholeiitic basalt, although parts are more silica-rich than typical basalt and may be similar to
andesitic rocks on Earth or silica glass.

The Phoenix lander returned data showing Martian soil to be slightly alkaline and containing
elements such as magnesium, sodium, potassium and chlorine. These nutrients are found in soils
on Earth, and they are necessary for growth of plants. Experiments performed by the lander
showed that the Martian soil has a basic pH of 7.7, and contains 0.6% of the salt perchlorate.

Liquid water cannot exist on the surface of Mars due to low atmospheric pressure, which is less
than 1% that of Earths, except at the lowest elevations for short periods. The two polar ice caps
appear to be made largely of water. The volume of water ice in the south polar ice cap, if melted,
would be sufficient to cover the entire planetary surface to a depth of 11 meters (36 ft).

COMPETITION BRIEF

We invite you to design innovative solutions for Mars . Exploration . Base International
Competition - the first ever self - sufficient Mars base/colony designed for living, working,
researching and space tourism - why not - grow up potatoes like Matt Damon too.

What this means is ultimately up to you.

We would like to have you call the shots of how you want to interpret this challenge. There are no
right or wrong solutions, just endless possibilities! Dont see the brief as constricting imagination.
Feel free to develop it in the direction you see fit. We seek true originality and proactive change
through design. We encourage you to have fun, explore possibilities and release your creative
problem-solving genius.

Are you relying on materials/natural shelters found on Mars or are your materials brought to
site from Earth? 3D printing? Lightweight or heavyweight structures? Inflatables? Is the base
prefabricated? Is it assembled on Mars or does it come already assembled in full or in part from
Earth?

Perhaps its a combination or methods? How are the materials brought to Mars?
How big is your base? Are you proposing a Mars city for 50,000 people or a Mars building(s) for
a dozen astronauts?

Is the design modular? Where people can live permanently as Martian citizens, or an area
where astronauts/space tourists will have living shifts similar to what currently happens on the
International Space Station?

Is your base designed to have an artificial atmosphere? What about sustenance? How are you
planning to make the base self-sufficient? Or is it self-sufficient to a degree but still relies on
supply links form Earth?
