Dear Greek Community,
As you may know, with the efforts of the ASI Board of Directors, ASI Student Government and the
Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, SLO City Council recently voted 4-1 to reject a proposal to extend
the St. Patrick's Day’s Safety Enhancement Zone through the first three weeks of March from its original
enactment for March 17 alone. This accomplishment signifies a turning point in the student-community
relationship and shows tremendous promise that the new city leadership will prioritize building
relationships over creating ordinances.
Although the Greek Life community is certainly not responsible for all or even a majority of the student
body and their celebratory activities taking place, we should recognize the significant influence we have
in our community. Our members make up approximately 20% of the student body at Cal Poly and pride
ourselves in serving as the leaders of the campus. Greek members should take pride and responsibility in
their affiliation at all times, but most particularly in situations where student, neighborhood and
community civility is concerned.
The City Council decision to reject the proposal for extending the Safety Enhancement Zone in March
was one made out of trust for the student body. The upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday will surely be our
opportunity as students of Cal Poly and especially as members of the Greck community, that we deserved
the faith and trust they put in us to respect the local residents and neighborhoods. We would like to ask all
of your to make a conscious additional effort this year to be considerate of your neighbors, communities,
law enforcement officers, and fellow students during this St. Patrick’s Day season.
As you may recall, the history of the holiday in San Luis Obispo has resulted in several additional
enforcement efforts made on behalf of the San Luis Obispo Police Department and other local officials.
‘These measures are primarily being made to ensure the safety and civility of our residents, neighborhoods
and communities. One measure being taken is the enactment of a Safety Enhancement Zone, or double
fine period for party-related violations, from midnight on Friday, March 17th until 7 A.M. on
Saturday, Mareh 18th. In addition, after being in close communication with the local law enforcement,
we would like to make you aware that the local officials will be making the following additional
enforcement efforts for the holiday:
Increased staffing for foot, bicycle, vehicle and plainly clothed patrol officers
‘Additional deployment of DUI saturation patrols and checkpoints
Enforcement of a Zero Tolerance policy for alcohol & noise related crimes
Alcohol Beverage Control checks at local distributors for underage drinking
We are informing you of these additional enforcement efforts being made so that you are even more
aware of the dangers and risks behind unruly or disturbing behavior surrounding the holiday. It is our
hope that you will keep these law enforcement precautions in mind as you make decisions about how to
celebrate the holiday responsibly. Please remember to use safe methods of transportation such as a
designated driver, taxis, Uber, Lyft, SLO Safe Ride and to stay clear out of the middle of the streets,

1 Grand Avenue | San Luis Obispo | CA | 93407:200%We believe that the San Luis Obispo City Council made the right decision to trust the Cal Poly student
body. The opportunity to prove to the community, and to ourselves, that college-related celebrations
should not and will not disrupt or endanger the wellbeing of our residents and neighborhoods should be
taken full advantage of. We are proud that our Greek organizations have committed to participate in a
neighborhood cleanup effort in the immediate campus area on the morning of Sunday, March 19th
and hope that the other community efforts recognize the contributions being made by the Greek
community for the local neighborhoods.
Thank you for being upstanding citizens of San Luis Obispo, and we have faith that you will take your
obligations as Greeks seriously and celebrate the holiday responsibility.
Sincerely,
Shirin Beroukhim Catelyn Agbayani
