He was born in 1832 in a small village in the north- west of England. Charles studied Mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford. After his degree® he became 2 teacher of Mathematics at Christ Church but he didn’t enjoy this job very much, In his free time he wrote poems and short stories. Many of them appeared in magazines. In 1856 he published his frst piece of work, @ poem, under the name Lewis Carall. His best-known ‘Work, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was published in 1865, Iwas a great success and Carroll became rich and famous but he continued to teach, In 1871 he published another ‘Alice’ book called Alice Through The Looking Glass. He finaly stopped teaching in 1881 to concentrate on writing. He was a good photographer and he took many photographs of Alice Liddell, one ofthe daughters of the Dean® of Christ Church, She was the model forthe Alice in his stores. Carroll never moved away from Christ Church College and he ‘ever married. Alice and her older sister are sitting on the farass in a field on a warm day in July. Alice is bored. She fas asleep and dreams that she goes 10.2 magical place called Wonderland, Her adventures begin when she follows a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. At the bottom of the hole, she finds a small door into @ beautiful garden. She can't go through the door because she's to big. Many strange things happen to her before she manages to enter the garden. She drinks and eats things that make her grow bigger and smaller. She swims in a pool of her own tears*. She meets a cat with a big smile, She has tea with a hatter*, a hare and a dormouse. nthe garden, she meets characters which are from a pack of playing cards and the Queen of Hearts invites her to play croquet®. Finally she goes to the trial® of the Knave of Hearts®, whois accused! of stealing some jam tarts*, The trial is very silly and Alice begins to get angry, Then she wakes up, The beautiful illustrations in the first copies of the book were done by Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) and they are as famous 2s the stories themselves. There was nothing else to do so Alice continued talking to herself ‘Poor Dinah (Dinah was her ca.) “Are you missing me*, Dinah? What a pity you aren't here, too! She landed on some leaves at the bottom ofthe hole. She could see a long dark passage* in front of her and the White Rabbit was at the end of it. She ran after him quickly but he disappeared round a comer, When she got there, she found herself ina big empty room. The White Rabbit wasn't there. She looked around her. There were a lat of doors. There was a litle golden key fn it, She picked it up and put it in all the lacks on the doors bt it didn’t open any of them. She moved a curtain on one of the walls and discovered another door, avery small one. She put the key inthe lock. It was exactly the right size! She opened the ‘door and looked through it At the end ofa low passage she saw a beautiful garden. It was full of brightly coloured flowers and fountains. ‘Oh, how beautiful” she said. ''d love to go there but I'm too big to get through the door." ‘She walked back to the table. There was a bottle an it now. There were 2 lot of animals and birds in the water now, including a part, a baby eagle, a duck and a dado. They all got out too and followed Alice and the mouse. “The dodo became extinct (it no longer exists) at the end of the 17° century. Five ofthese animals and birds are extinct and five are imaginary. The next thing she heard was alittle scream* and a CRASH! of broken glass. “That's the greenhouse,” Alice thought, "Next she heard the Rabbit say, ‘Pat!
