Example AC Drives

1. A three-phase star-connected, 60 Hz, 4-pole induction motor has the

following constants per phase which refer to the stator; R1 = R2 = 0.024
and X1 = X2 = 0.18 . The motor is controlled by the variable
frequency control with a constant (V/f). Determine the following for an
operating frequency of 0.012 kHz;
a) The break down torque as the ratio of its value at rated frequency
for motoring and braking
b) The starting torque and rotor current in terms of their values at the
rated frequency

2. For motor (refer to example 1), if the rated slip is 4%, then determine
the motor speed for rated torque and frequency, f = 30 Hz. The motor is
controlled with a constant (V/f) ratio.

3. A three-phase 400 V, 50 Hz, 6-pole, 960 rpm star-connected induction

motor has the following parameters per phase referred to the stator;

R1 = 0.4 , R2 = 0.2 , X1 = X2 = 1.5 , Xm = 30

The motor is controlled by variable frequency control at a constant flux

of rated value. Determine;
a) The motor speed and the stator current at half of rated torque
and 25 Hz
b) By assuming the speed-torque curve to be straight line, solve for
part (a), for s < sm
c) The stator frequency, stator current and voltage at the rated
braking torque and 800 rpm speed.

4. A three-phase, 460 V, 60 Hz, 6-pole, 1180 rpm, star-connected, squirrel-

cage induction motor has the following parameters per phase referred
to the stator;

R1 = 0.19 , R2 = 0.07 , X1 = 0.75 , X2 = 0.67 , Xm = 20

The motor was controlled by the six-step inverter. The D.C input to the
inverter is fed by a six-pulse, fully control rectifier.
a) What should be the rectifier firing angle for getting the rated
fundamental voltage across the motor if the rectifier is fed by an
A.C source of 460 V, 50 Hz
b) If the machine is operated at a constant flux, then determine;
i. The inverter frequency at 600 rpm and rated torque
ii. The inverter frequency at 500 rpm and half the rated
torque. Also, find the motor current.
