4J Week at a Glance

School Notes:

Read-a-thon: We have a ton of really cool events coming up for

Reading Week! Since Sunday February 26th, all Elementary students
have been recording their reading on a special reading log. The more
they read, the more minutes they earn for the class! Our final day to
collect and count minutes from reading logs is this coming Sunday!
o Classes are competing to get a class prize for the most minutes.
This is decided by how many books they earn.
For every 240 minutes (4 hours) the class earns a book

Our 3 achievement levels have been decided:

Goal #1- 5,000 minutes read = Students can dress me up in crazy

clothes ACHIEVED!
Goal #2- 10,000 minutes read = I will eat some of the hottest hot sauce
ever and bring in snacks to share in class! ACHIEVED! Students can
bring in snacks to share with the class on Wednesday March 22nd!
Goal #3- 20,000 minutes read = The student who reads the most in our
class gets to throw a PIE IN MY FACE!!!

Our week three total is: 10 567 minutes!!! Great work, 4J!!!

Book Week Contests- Have all been taken in today and winners will be
revealed at M&Ms this Monday!

UAE Mothers Day: Dear Moms, we will be having a very special

Mothers Day M&Ms assembly this Monday at 9:15am. It will be filled
with special performances and tributes to the beautiful, supportive and
PERFECT moms of our students. Please come to see us and join in the
festivities!

Recorders: Everyone is very excited about their brand new recorders

and there are musicians throughout Grade 4. We love how enthusiastic
our students are about learning their notes but encourage them to be
mindful of where they are playing! Please note that recorders must not
be played in the hallways and stairwells between classes.

Lunch eating vs playing time- All grade 1-6 students are reminded
about the eating vs. playing times for lunch. Grade 4 is expected to
bring their lunch kits to the cafeteria, leave them on our designated
table, then play outside from 12:15-12:40. For the second half of lunch
(12:40-1:00), this is when grades 4-6 are eating lunch in the cafeteria. If

they finish eating early, they are more than welcome to continue
playing outside. The only area off bounds from 12:40-1:00 is the soccer
pitch because this is the time when grades 1-3 get their turn. The other
reason students must eat in the cafeteria is because there is garbage
being left behind at lunch outdoors.
After school Clubs and Sibling Pick-up: Just a reminder that students
are not allowed to join their older siblings to after-school clubs or play
after school in the courtyard without a parent present. To ensure the
safety of all students, our school policy states that all students staying
after school must be attending a club that they are enrolled in OR wait
in the late room where a teacher is present until 4 oclock. Any students
staying past 4 oclock will wait for their parents in the office. Thank you
for your cooperation.

PE Kits: Our PE staff is working hard to prepare the Grade 4s for the
upcoming years by strictly following uniform guidelines. Please ensure
that your child is adhering to the following:

o Sundays- Students come to school in their formal uniform and

change before their PE class

o Wednesdays- Students come to school in their PE kit and bring

their formal uniform to change into after PE class

o Thank you for your help with reminding our children!

Our novel study: How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell. We will
continue to review the questions and strategies in class as we work
through this novel study. J

Math: 4J has shown AMAZING growth in Multiplication and Division of

Larger Numbers! I am beyond pleased with the effort our class has put
toward developing the skills involved in solving problems and even
making their own! Congratulations on a job well done on the Math Unit
Test! Please sign and return the test on Sunday. J

o We will continue to focus on multiplication, division and word

problem skills throughout the year in order to help all students
achieve to their highest potential!

Our new unit in Math is: Data Analysis. Throughout the year, we have
been exploring ways to ask questions, collect information and analyze
our data. We will continue to refine these skills through the use of tallies,

charts, pictographs, bar graphs and line graphs. Homework for the
weekend includes: Bar graphs worksheets- cars, fruits and little pets.
Homework book pages 116-121.

As I stress every week, number concepts are foundational and will be

vital to success in all of our math topics this year. As much practice that
students can do, the better! I highly encourage all students to
continuously practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication and
basic division skills by using the following sites for math help:

In Social Studies, we have started our research for our Natural

Resources project! Students will be given 2 more classes for research
and will be asked to complete their project at home if they require
additional time. Natural Resources projects will be due to be presented
on Sunday April 9th, 2017.

In Science this week, we have been tracking the growth of our bean
seeds. Some have sprouted enormous roots already while others are
slower to start. By next week, we will all have our beans planted inside
our new recycled bottle planters and start graphing their growth.
o Using all of our knowledge of how plants work and how they can
be classified, we are going to be working on a fun, creative
plant-MAKING project! Your child will be designing their very own
plant and creating a trading card that details all of its different
elements, including: its appearance, the flowering process, how
it spreads its seeds, its adaptations and its special features.
Brainstorming ideas are due on Sunday March 19th and the FINAL
trading card will be due for presentation on Sunday April 9th,
2017.

If anyone has spare planters, seeds or soil that they are happy to send
in, we would be very appreciative.

Library day is on Sunday. If your child does not have their library bag on
library day, they are unable to borrow. Please note that students are

welcome to borrow many times a week during the designated recess

and after school times.
o There will be no borrowing from the library during the week

near the bird cages.

required to practice reading to themselves for at least 20 minutes a
