Unit Paper 4: Play
According to Pink (2006), its essential to mix work and play because people work more
effectively when they are having fun. In my own perspective, play is fun because it doesnt
require much to think about and is solely based on what we personally find enjoyable. Play can
be easily incorporated into artmaking by being able to create a piece out of freewill. In addition,
incorporating play and artmaking in the classroom can enhance the way students learn. By
encouraging intrinsic motivation, students will more than likely be more engaged in what they
are learning since they show a genuine interest in the topic/idea (Douglas & Jaquith, 2009). In
addition, when students are connected and engaged, they are more likely to want to learn.
For the first studio, I was surprised that we were given free choice as to what we wanted
to create and how we wanted to create it. I thought it was a great idea to have a limited amount
of different stations but with variety because it allows control to both the student and the teacher.
I would utilize majority of the same stations such as the cloud clay, watercolor painting, and
paper/foil crafts because they simple and easy to clean up. I would also have a station where
students can create art using crayons or markers and embellish their creations with materials such
as buttons, pom-poms, crepe or tissue paper, stickers, etc. With the second studio, I wouldnt
change anything about the lesson because its an easy activity that doesnt take much. I would
especially utilize setting boundaries as to where the students can work so that the students dont
