ABOUT SCIENTIFIC WORK AND OUR UNIVERSITY

(ONE HUNDRED YEARS LATER)

Summary

One century after in his inaugural address as a rector, Jovan Cvijic, the founder of the aca-
demic ethnology in Serbia, set the course for development of our humanistic social science to-
wards ethno-phantasmagoria, I use the aforementioned jubilee to turn the attention to the fortunate
development of our discipline in the direction in which Cvijic did not set its future and analyze it
consequentialistically. We can be pleased with the analysis of curriculum of the basic academic
studies of ethnology and anthropology and latest production in academic ethnology/anthropology
in Serbia. The author of this paper belongs to the third generation of university professors who
have not seen as a primary objective of ethnology/anthropology the search for pseudo-scientific
proofs as to where ethnic borders should be placed, what the authentic folk tradition is or how
to preserve it. Now, numerous generations of students of ethnology/anthropology already do not
learn, do not believe and, most importantly, do not spread ideas in their professional work or pub-
licly that at the time Jovan Cvijic set for the discipline and humanistic social science in Serbia in
general. They do not believe that there is an authentic, coherent, unquestioning national culture,
national tradition and its elements that a good ethnologist, hopefully epistemically favored (be-
ing of rural origin), should discover, learn and convey to posterity. The analysis of transformation
of curricula shows a stable turn towards anti-essentialism and anti-nationalism, hence a general
anti-racist tendency. The ideological base of ethnology as a national science, set from Garasanin
to Cvijic, exposed and destroyed itself as a pseudo-scientific, monstrous ideological and overrated
idea and ethno-megalomania, destructive to the very nation that it was allegedly supposed to serve.
I am proud that I belong to the academic community whose vast majority of the currently active
members has not participated in this undertaking.
