T here are dramas for people who love
murder mysteries, cop shows and
even comic books, but a unique drama
offers viewers something totally new,
with elaborate fight scenes and stunning
visuals.
Chinese-American action star Daniel
Wu (Gen-X Cops, 1999) brings his tal-
ents to the small screen as Sunny, a
fiercely skilled warrior in AMCs martial
arts drama Into the Badlands, which
returns for a second season Sunday,
March 19. The show is set in a post-
apocalyptic world where guns have been
banned and seven ruthless barons rule
what was once the American midwest,
thanks to loyal warriors, or clippers, like
Sunny.
One of the most dangerous clippers in
the Badlands, Sunny has worked his way
up through the ranks to become regent
(head clipper) to the areas most power-
ful Baron, Quinn (Marton Csokas, The
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the
Ring, 2001). In the first season, Sunny
encountered a teenager, M.K. (Aramis
Knight, Enders Game, 2013), who har-
bored a dark power, prompting Sunny to
take M.K. under his wing as his newest
trainee, or colt, as theyre called in the
Badlands.
Into the Badlands was a hit right
out of the gate when the series premiere
in November 2015 pulled in more than

went on to average more than five mil-
lion viewers per episode, earning it the
distinction of being the fourth-highest-
rated freshman season of any cable
series ever. Not surprisingly, it didnt take
long for AMC to order a second season.
With its deep dive into authentic
martial arts, the visually stunning Into
the Badlands proved to be unlike any-
thing else on television, said AMC exec-
utive Charlie Collier when the 10-epi-
sode season 2 deal was announced last
March. He went on to praise creators
Alfred Gough (Smallville) and Miles
Millar (Shanghai Noon, 2000) for
delivering an artfully crafted series.

Q: Two shows that Ive thorough-
ly enjoyed these past few years are
TURN: Washingtons Spies and
The Last Ship, but I havent heard
anything about them recently. Will
they be returning?
A: The news on your two shows is sort
of good and great, respectively.
To start with, both are spring-summer
shows, which is why you havent heard
much about them lately. And also, to
start with, theyll both be coming back
this spring-summer.
However, thatll be it for TURN:
Washingtons Spies. When AMC
renewed the show for a fourth season, it
was clear that would be its last.
Series creator Craig Silverstein chose
to look on the bright side of that news.
I am so pleased to be able to bring the
story of the Culper Ring to its epic con-
clusion, at the point where the revolu-
tionary war ends and the great American
experiment truly begins, he said in the
official announcement of the renewal
(and cancelation).
No date was announced with the
news, but all three previous seasons ran
from April to June, so this one will likely
do the same.
As for The Last Ship, the news is
unambiguously good. Not only has it
been renewed for a fourth season, to air
this June, but its already been renewed
for a fifth as well.
This might sound like an enormous
vote of confidence from its broadcaster,
TNT, but apparently this was actually a
budgetary decision. The two seasons will
shoot at the same time, which is faster
and cheaper than doing them separately.
Of course, TNT doesnt mention that
little detail when enthusing about the
show. We look forward to watching the
cast and production team ratchet up the
drama, action and suspense even more
over the next two seasons through sum-
mer 2018, said Sarah Aubrey, TNTs
executive vice-president of original pro-
gramming.
Q: Who was the first actor ever
to portray Batman?
A: Thats an interesting one, basically
because it wasnt Adam West.
Wests parody version of the Batman
character, in the incredibly campy mid-
60s TV series, is the oldest one most
people remember.
However, the first filmed version of
the caped crusader appeared all the way
back in 1943, played by the otherwise-
unknown actor Lewis Wilson.
Wilson played Batman (and his alter-
ego, wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne) in a
15-chapter theatrical serial (that is, a
series of connected short films that
played in cinemas, a style of filmmaking

Its interesting to note that, at the
time, the character wasnt the iconic
hero he is today. Batman had only
debuted in the comics pages in 1939,
and then only in the anthology series
Detective Comics. He didnt get a
comic book series of his own until 1940.
Even so, he was big enough by 1943
to get a serial film series, and it was the
biggest thing that would ever happen to
Wilsons acting career. According to
IMDB, Wilson has just 15 acting credits
to his name, eight of which were
uncredited film parts. He did star in all
26 episodes of the TV mystery show
Craig Kennedy, Criminologist in 1952,
but sadly not as Craig Kennedy.
Wilson wasnt the only actor to don
the pointy-eared cowl before West.
Another serial film version was released
in 1949, with Robert Lowery in the role.
Lowery is otherwise remembered for a
key supporting role in the 1963 John
Wayne film McLintock, and little else.
Q: I havent seen Pure Genius
in about a month. Did that wrap up
without me knowing it?
A: That depends: Did you last see it on
Jan. 26? That was the airdate of what
CBS called the shows season finale,
but which most of the entertainment
press called its series finale.
The series is (perhaps was) about a
medical genius who teams up with a
tech genius to treat only the most rare
and insurmountable medical mysteries,
according to its official description. It
debuted this past fall, and its ratings
were something close to terrible it
was the 20th-most-watched scripted
show on CBSs schedule for the season.
Thats the main reason why the press
is delivering its eulogy already, even
though the network hasnt made an offi-
cial announcement.
The other reason is that Pure
Genius creator Jason Katims has
already moved on to a new show.
Katims is a big deal in the TV biz he
previously did Parenthood and Friday
Night Lights, among other shows
and so its not surprising that he landed
on his feet.
His new show, Drama High, is
based on the true story of an inspiration-
al drama teacher at a working-class high
school.
Pure Geniuss two stars have done
well for themselves, too. Augustus Prew
(who played the tech genius, James Bell)
has a role in the revival of Foxs hit series
Prison Break, due out soon. Dermot
Mulroney, the medical genius, recently
landed a role in the big-screen romantic
drama The Mountain Between Us,
which stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet.

Fox strikes a chord with new series 'Shots Fired'

F ox is launching a new 10-episode
event series, and its going to strike
a chord. Plucked straight from the
headlines, Shots Fired will sadly feel
familiar to viewers as co-creators
Reggie Rock Bythewood (Notorious,
2009) and Gina Prince-Bythewood
(Beyond the Lights, 2014) tackle the
ramifications of racially charged police
brutality. The new drama premieres
Wednesday, March 22, on Fox.
Its an uncomfortable topic for some
people, but its one that definitely
needs discussing, and sometimes the
best way to raise awareness and gen-
erate conversation is through the artis-
tic lens of television. You only have to
look at shows such as The Flip Wilson
Show and Roots, both having aired
in the 70s, which helped break
through the color barrier. Or you could
look at the show Ellen, starring Ellen
DeGeneres. Character and actress
almost concurrently came out as gay,
starting the narrative shift of gay
acceptance on TV.
For Shots Fired, which originally
premiered at the Sundance Film
Festival in January, its very clear that it
is still a TV show with some common
police procedural tropes, but its also
trying to advance the story about the
criminal justice system.
