Title: Energy and Energetics
Aim: To determine the heat of solution of ethanol and water
Apparatus and materials:
polystyrene cup
2 measuring cylinders
250ml beaker
foil
mercury thermometer
distilled water
ethanol
Procedure: 30cm3 of distilled water was poured into a measuring cylinder and was
transferred into the polystyrene cup. The temperature of the water was measured
using a mercury thermometer. Using the other measuring cylinder , 30cm 3 of
ethanol was measured and also transferred into the polystyrene cup. The cup was
immediately covered with a piece of foil and the temperature was measured by
boring a hole through the foil and inserting the thermometer. Values were then
recorded and discussed.

Calculations:
Assumptions:
1cm3=1g
mass of solution = volume of water + volume of
solute
specific heat capacity of water = the specific heat
capacity of the solution
Heat loss to the surroundings is negligible
1. Calculation for the number of moles of C2H5OH dissolved
Moles= volume x
concentration
2. H n mhn,Calculation for the heat released in dissolving ______ moles of C2H5OH
Heat released=mass x specific heat x temperature rise/
E=mCT
E=mCT
E=___x____x___
E=_____J / .____ kJ
Therefore : heat absorbed in dissolving ____ moles of C2H5OH = ____kJ
___moles
i.e heat of solution H= -_______
