Problem Statement:
Jeff and his family had curry goat for dinner. Jeff was asked to wash the dishes that evening.
He had two different brands of dishwashing soap in his kitchen. He could not decide on
which soap to use to wash the dishes and get rid of the tough curry stains. Plan and design
an experiment to find out which dishwashing soup is better at eliminating the stains.

Hypothesis:
Jeff and his family had curry goat for dinner. Jeff was asked to wash the dishes that evening.
He had two different brands of dishwashing soap in his kitchen.

Aim:
Jeff and his family had curry goat for dinner. Jeff was asked to wash the dishes that evening.
He had two different brands of dishwashing soap in his kitchen.

Apparatus and Materials:

The materials for this experiment include two different brands of dishwashing soap, 2 clear
cups, a universal indicator solution and water. The apparatus for this experiment includes a
dropper, measuring cups and spoons, and a universal indicator pH scale.

Diagram of Apparatus

Method:
1. Setup the apparatus and materials as shown in the diagram above.
2. Record the initial colour of both dishwashing soaps in the table below.
3. Pour 1/3 cup of each dishwashing soap into the two separate cups.
4. Pour one tablespoon of water into both cups of dishwashing soap.
5. Gently and slightly shake each cup from side to side (to make a uniformed solution).
6. Add three drops of the universal indicator solution to each cup.
7. Allow the universal indicator solution to diffuse completely into each soapy solution.
8. Record the colour change in the table below (if any) as well as any other
observations.
9. Compare the final colour of each dishwashing soap solution to the colours shown on
the universal indicator pH scale. Record the pH of each solution in the table below.

Variables:
● Independent Variable – The dishwashing soap solutions
● Dependent Variable – The pH shown on the universal indicator scale
● Controlled Variables – The amount of soap added to the cups, the volume of water
added to the cups, the volume of universal indicator used in each cup.

Treatment of Results:
Jeff and his family had curry goat for dinner. Jeff was asked to wash the dishes that evening.
He had two different brands of dishwashing soap in his kitchen. He could not decide on
which soap to use to wash the dishes and get rid of the tough curry stains. Plan and design
an experiment to find out which dishwashing soup is better at eliminating the stains.

Expected Results:

Initial Color Color Change pH Level

Brand 1

Brand 2
It is expected that the brand with the higher pH level will clean better than the one with the
lower pH level. This is because foods with fats and oils are acidic, so a higher basicity would
make it easier to neutralize the food residue and clean the dishes.
