What is Statistics?

Statistics is the branch of Mathematics that deals

with the various methods of collecting, presenting
and interpreting information or data, to help us in
decision-making.

Explain the use of the word average in each
of the following.

On average, the favourite The standard elevator can hold

Measures of Central Tendencies
Mean is the most frequently used measure of central tendency and generally considered the best measure
of it. The mean is derived by adding all the values together and dividing this total by the number of values
added together

Median the middle value of a data set when arranged in ascending or descending order.

Mode is the most frequent value in the data set

12
Examples
• Example 1: The data below represents a class vote of places students would like to visit for their end of
year celebration. Calculate the mean, median and mode.

This data is considered Categorical data

The mean and median cannot be found for Categorical data

• Example 2: Find the mean, median, mode, and range for the following list of values:
13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13

Mean = 15, Median = 14, Mode = 13, Range = 8
