CLIMATE CHANGE

LESSON OBJECTIVES
1.Define the terms climate change and global warming;

2.Outline the main causes of climate change;

3. Identify the main greenhouse gases and their sources;

4.Explain four ways in which global warming and climate

change impact the Caribbean.

5.Identify the ways climate change can be mitigated at the

individual, national and international level.

DEFINITIO
N OF KEY
TERMS
Watch the short
video at then
answer the
questions below:

1) What is climate
change?

2) Identify example
of greenhouse gases
CLIMATE
CHANGE
Climate change refers to :
- change in global or
regional climate patterns
which has become obvious
from the late 20th century to
present.

-Change due mainly to

human activity
CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT IS HAPPPENING IN THIS PICTURE?
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
- refers to the trapping of heat from the sun n the earth’s
atmosphere by a layer of gases including ____________
dioxide , methane and ___________ oxide.

These gases allow incoming sunlight to pass through but

retain most of the heat radiated back from the earth’s
surface.
GLOBAL WARMING: WHAT IS
BEING REFLECTED HERE?
GLOBAL WARMING
Refers to the gradual increase in global temperatures over
the last century.

Temperature has increased by an average of 0.6° C over

the 20th century. This is due mainly to increased level of
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
MATCH THE SOURCE WITH ITS
CORRECT GREENHOUSE GAS

GREENHOUSE GAS SOURCE

Carbon Dioxide Chemical fertilizers

Methane Burning of fossil fuels including fuel used in motor vehicles, power plant

Nitrous oxide Deforestation

Chlorofluorocarbons
Industrial gases used in refrigerators, aerosols and air conditioners
(CFC)
Water Vapour Bacterial activity in livestock and rice fields

Climate will continue to
Our climate has change!! Our climate
changed!! demands changed!!
-temperature will continue
-rising sea levels to increase by 1°-3.5°C -What can we do to
-increasing global -Rainfall will continue to stop climate change?
temperatures decrease
-variable rainfall and -Caribbean will be 25% -What actions are
change in rainfall drier while Jamaica will be being taken at the
-intense weather 40-5% drier by end of the national and
events century international levels?
-1% Jamaica land will be
lost
CHECKPOINT
1) Define the term climate change.

2) Name two types of greenhouse gases

and provide two examples of each.

3) Identify two examples of how climate

has changed?
EFFECTS OF
CLIMATE
CHANGE

Identify at
least two
impacts of
climate
change
CORAL REEF
DAMAGE

An increase in sea temperature 1-2˚ C

can cause coral bleaching which kills
the algae that provides food for the
coral polyps.

Coral reefs are an important habitant

for fish and other marine creatures and
they also protect coastlines from the
force of approaching waves.

Damage to coral reefs will therefore

result in a decline in certain species as
well as increased coastal erosions
FLOODING OF COASTAL
LANDS
Many cities and other settlements are built
on low-lying coastal land in the Caribbean.

Many hotels are built next to the beach,

very close to sea level, since this is what
attracts many tourists to the Caribbean.

Major roads such as the Palisadoes and

major airports such as Norman Manley and
Donald Sangster are built next to the sea.

The rise in sea level will therefore result in

massive destruction in many Caribbean
towns and cities
Longer period of drought
have resulted in decreased
agricultural production in
several countries.

This affects farmer’s

incomes, the cost of food
on the local market.

NEGATIVE IMPACT Less agricultural products

ON AGRICULTURE to export
MORE INTENSE
STORMS AND
HURRICANE
The increasing frequency and
intensity of storms and hurricanes
has caused massive destruction to
infrastructure and property.

Hurricane Dorian in September

2019 resulted in more than 60
deaths and massive destruction of
roads, bridges and homes in The
Bahamas
ADDRESSIN
G CLIMATE
CHANGE

Based on the
video, how
can you
mitigate
climate
change?
MEASURES TO ADDRESS
CLIMATE
International level
CHANGE
Kyoto Protocol-adopted for use in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan. This agreement commits industrialized countries
to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

National level
Signing agreements on climate change e.g. Kyoto Protocol
Participation in global climate change conferences e.g. Paris Climate Change Conference 2015
Encouraging rain-water harvesting
Encouraging tree-planting

Individual level
Using energy efficient energy saving household appliances
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace
CHECKPOINT
1) Name and explain two effects of climate change.

2) Identify one measure that can be used to address

climate change at the
i)Individual
ii) National
iii) International Level
