The two white clay painted table dishes which are discussed in the article
have been unearthed during systematic archaeological excavations and research
by Y. Changova and K. Popkonstantinov in the low level riverside section of the
Exterior City of Veliki Preslav known as Selishte. They have been discovered at
different occasions almost 40 years ago while digging at one of the sites dating to
the 9th-10th century.
The author considers mainly the painted decoration put on their interior
(bottom and walls). Although the vessels are strongly fragmented, he reconstructs
with a great degree of probability the blessing hand of Jesus Christ on the bottom
and the walls of one of the vessels (ill 1) and the strongly anthropomorphized
figure of a lion passant to the right on the second one (ill. 2).
On the basis of the flat and shallow forms of the dishes and after a
sophisticated analysis of the images which they exhibit the author concludes that
the latters only function was liturgical. They were used as plates in the
preparation of the holy liturgy.
