Vocabulary and expressions cards | Teachers notes

How to use the cards

The Vocabulary cards are based on selected items of target lexis from the Working with
words section of each unit. The Expressions cards are based on selected Key expressions
from the Business communication skills section of each unit. There are a number of
activities that you can use with the cards (details of possible activities are given below).
You might like to use one of the activities instead of a similar task in the Students Book.
Alternatively, you might like to use them for revision purposes at the end of a lesson,
or at the beginning of the next lesson. You can also edit and adapt the cards yourself.
You might like to choose different lexis, or you might prefer to write definitions in your
students first language. Make sure you mix the cards well before you give them to
yourstudents!

Activities for the Vocabulary cards

Matching
Students work in pairs or small groups and match the collocations and / or definitions.

Pelmanism / Memory
Students work in small groups. If the cards include collocations and definitions, discard
the definitions for now. If the cards include only words and definitions, use all the cards.
Place the selected cards face down on a table or on the floor. Students take turns to
uncover two cards. If they match, the student should take the matching pair of cards
and then turn over two more. If they dont match, the student should turn them back
over then another student should have a turn. The winner is the student with the
most cards at the end of the activity. If you discarded the definitions, you could then
give out the definition cards and ask students to match their collocations to the correct
definitions.

Definitions
As a revision activity, only give out the definitions cards. Students work in pairs or
small groups. Place the definitions cards face down in a pile in front of the students.
Students take turns to take a card, read out the definition and think of the word or
collocation for that definition. Students can help each other where necessary.

Describe it
Discard the definitions. If the cards include collocations, make sure these collocations
have been put together correctly within the pack. Students work in small groups. Place
the cards face down in front of the students. Students take turns to take a word or
collocation. They then have one minute to describe the word or collocation without
saying the words they see on the card. The other students have to guess what the
word/ collocation is. If a student guesses correctly, they keep the card(s). The winner
is the student with the most cards at the end of the activity.

New sentences
For further practice, after students have completed one of the card activities above
you could ask them to work in pairs and write their own sentences using the words or
collocations.

Activities for the Expressions cards
Matching
Students work in pairs or small groups and match the expressions to the functions.

Fluency work
Students work in pairs or small groups. Discard the functions cards and place the
expressions cards face up on the table in front of them. During one of the fluency
activities in the applicable Business communication skills or Case study sections of the
Students Book, ask students to use the expressions in front of them where appropriate.
When they use an expression successfully, they can take that card. At the end of the
activity, the student with the most cards is the winner. Make sure that you monitor
carefully during this activity to make sure that students are using the expressions
appropriately.

Mini-dialogues
Students work in pairs. Discard the functions cards and place the expressions cards
face down in a pile in front of them. Students take turns to take a card and read the
expression. Their partner should then give an appropriate response.

Expressions brainstorm
Students work in pairs or small groups. Discard the expressions cards and give them
the functions cards. Give them five minutes to write down as many expressions as they
can for each function (these can be new expressions or expressions from the book). The
winner is the pair or group with the most correct expressions.
