GATE-2016

Engineering Combines The Fields Of Science And Maths To Solve Real World
Problems That Improve The World Around Us. What Really Distinguishes An
Engineer Is His Ability To Implement Ideas In A Cost Effective And Practical
Approach. This Ability To Take A Thought, Or Abstract Idea, And Translate It
Into Reality Is What Separates An Engineer From Other Fields Of Science And
Mathematics.

Four Years Of Research Life Of Individual Decides Forty Years Of Future Of

The Nation. Then 4lakh Engineers Of Research.????? Thats The Power Of
An Engineering Student

This Privilege Corral To INDIA And For INDIAN Students Due To IITs,
Iisc Whose Effort Made Engineering And Technology To Reach
Indians,,,Due To Which Today INDIA Is Standing One Of The Top Listing
Countries In The World In The Field Of Technology..

That Knowledge Wisdom Society The Indian Institute Of Science (Iisc) And
Seven Indian Institutes Of Technology (Iits At Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati,
Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras And Roorkee) Jointly Administer The Conduct Of

Department Of Higher Education, Ministry Of Human Resource Development
(MHRD), Government Of India.

I Admire That It Is Must Necessary To All The Engineers To Write This

Exam As It Tests The REAL ENGINEERING SKILLS.

Let's Now Analyze What Makes GATE So Important As A Career

Deciding Factor.
A Gateway To Extensive Practical Exercises, Various Case Studies,
Simulation & Modeling Of Real Life Problems, Individual And Group
Projects, Research Publications/Presentations In Journals/Conferences
Etc.
GATE Qualified Students Are Awarded Scholarship / Assistantship Of
Minimum Rs 5000/- Or More Per Month In All Engineering Colleges /
Institutes.
GATE Qualified Candidates In The Engineering Disciplines Are Also
Eligible For The Award Of Junior Research Fellowship At CSIR
Laboratories.
Foreign Universities & Industries Prefer GATE Qualified Candidates.
Some institutions specify GATE qualification as mandatory even for
admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programs. GATE
qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research
Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Top rank
holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for Shyama Prasad
Mukherjee Fellowship awarded by CSIR. Some government
organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying
to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.
In recent years, various academicians have recognized GATE as being
one of the toughest exams in its category. Some non-Indian universities
like the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological
University in Singapore and some technical universities in Germany also
identify GATE score as a parameter for judging the quality of the
candidates for admission into their Masters and Ph.D. programs.
Some management institutes like NITIE, Mumbai offer admission to Post
Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering on the basis of GATE score.
Admission in IIMs for the Fellow Programme in Management using GATE

Normalized GATE Score (new procedure)

Calculation of "normalized marks" for subjects held in multiple sessions (CE, CS, EC, EE
and ME):

Graph showing the linear relationship between "actual marks" and "normalized marks" of a candidate, in a
multiple-session
session subject (CE, EE, ME, EE or CE) of GATE.
g
M t = average marks of top 0.1 % of the candidates in all sessions of that subject.
g
M q = mean + standard deviation, of marks of all candidates in all sessions of that subject.
sub
th
Mti = average marks of top 0.1 % of candidates in the i session of that subject.
th
Miq = mean + standard deviation, of marks of candidates in the i session of that subject.

In 2014, examination for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME subjects is being held in multiple
mul sessions.
Hence, for these subjects, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in
the difficulty levels of the question sets across different sessions. The normalization is done
based on the fundamental assumption that"in
that all multi-session
session GATE papers, the distribution of
abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions".
sessions". According to the GATE committee,
this assumption is justified since "the number of candidates appearing in multi-session
multi subjects
in GATE 2014 is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random.
Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session
multi session subject, the number of candidates
allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude."
Based on the above, and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at
the following formula for calculating the normalized marks, for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME subjects:

Normalized mark (Mij) of jth candidate in ith session, is given by

Mij = {(Mgt - Mgq) / ( Mij - Miq )}[ Mti - Miq ] + Mgq

where,
Mij is the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in the ith session,
Mgt is the average marks of the top 0.1 % of the candidates in all sessions of that subject,
Mgq is the sum of mean and standard deviation of marks of all candidates in all sessions
of that subject,
Mti is the average of marks of top 0.1 % of candidates in the ith session of that subject,
Miq is the sum of mean and standard deviation of marks of candidates in the ith session of
that subject.

After
er evaluation of the answers, normalized marks based on the above
formula will be calculated using the raw (actual) marks obtained by a
candidate in the CE, CS, EC, EE or ME subject. The "score" will be
calculated using these normalized marks. For all other
other subjects (whose tests
are conducted in a single session), the actual marks obtained by the
candidates will be used in calculating the score.

Calculation of GATE Score for all subjects (both single-session

single and
multiple-session):
session):

Graph showing the linear relationship between marks and score in GATE.
Mq = Qualifying marks for general category candidates.
Mt = Average marks of top 0.1 % or top 10 (whichever is higher) candidates.
Sq = 350.
St = 900.
Note: In case of multiple-session
multiple subjects (EC, CS, ME, EE and CE), "marks" considered
are the "normalized marks".

From GATE 2014 onward (and year 2014-15

2014 of the 2-year
year validity period of
GATE 2013 score), a candidate's GATE score is computed by the following
new formula.[10]

where,
S = Score (normalized) of a candidate,
M = Marks obtained by a candidate ("normalized marks" in case of multiple-session
multiple
subjects CE, CS, EC, EE and ME),
Mq = Qualifying marks for general category candidates in that subject (usually 25 or +
,, whichever is higher),
= Average (i.e. arithmetic mean) of marks of all candidates in that subject,
= Standard deviation of marks of all candidates in that subject,
Mt = Average marks of top 0.1 % or top 10 (whichever is higher) candidates in that
subject,
St = 900 = Score assigned to Mt,
Sq = 350 = Score assigned to Mq.

Percentile:

A candidate's percentile denotes the percentage of

candidates scoring lower than that particular
candidate. It is calculated as:

Percentile = ( 1 - All India

rank / No. of candidates in
that subject ) x 100 %
Difficulty level of GATE
GATE, for long, has been known to test the Engineering basics in a smart way.
Complaints of "lengthy" problems have been rare. But the task of mastering an
entire course of Engineering (30 plus subjects) for a three hour test, itself gives
the test a certain level of toughness. Each year, only around 15 % of all
appearing candidates qualify.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

is one of the well known branches of engineering that finds its significance in
various modes of the students life.

ECE students should have good mathematical background to succeed in all

aspects.

1. Networks
2. Electronic Devices
3. Analog Circuits
4. Digital Circuits
5. Signal & Systems
6. Control Systems
7. Communications
8. ElectromagneticS

NETWORKS

Networks subject requires maximum concentration and will have more

weightage in the exam. It mainly deals with network theorems, nodal and
mesh analysis, Laplace transforms, 2 port networks, steady state analysis,
etc. It is another subject with more number of problems in each topic.
One should practice more number of problems from the standard
textbooks and previous GATE papers for success. Few textbooks for this
subject are mentioned.below:

Network Analysis by Van Valkenburg

Network Theory by Alexander Sadiku, UA Bakshi
Network Theory by Shaums outline, Robbins and Miller

CONTROL SYSTEMS

Control Systems is another important subject that finds more priority in

GATE exam. The students should learn about feedback systems, signal
flow graphs, Routh-Hurwitz criterion, Bode and Nyquist plots, PID
control, etc., to get good score. Most of the ECE students will concentrate
less on this subject by thinking tough; but by practicing one can get good
grip on the subject. The students can get good concepts and finds number
of problems from the textbooks like-
Control Systems by Ogatta,Kuo
Linear Control Systems by B.S Manke.

EDC AND ANALOG ELECTRONICS

From the analysis of recent GATE exams from 2014, EDC and ANALOG
ELECTRONICS are holding good weight in marks as well as the standard of
questions. Diode circuits, BJT amplifiers, FET biasing and amplifiers,
MOSFET physics and DC analysis, Frequency response, and Operational
amplifier applications and wave shapingmust be concentrated more for better
weightage. Also these topics are playing important role in interviews of IITs
and IISc admissions for Mtech through GATE. The students can get good
concepts and finds number of problems from the textbooks like-

Electronic Devices

more concentration.

Communications:
Communication Systems by Simon Haykin
Principle of Communication System by B. P. Lathi
Principle of Communication System by Taub & Schilling
Communication Systems by Carlson
Communication Systems by Sanjay Sharma

Out of all the subjects, the above mentioned subjects will require more attention
and a student can gain good score if he/she is able to the solve the questions in
these subjects in addition to the remaining subjects.

Digital circuits is another interesting subject which looks like an easy subject
but requires more practice. The student should practice the problems on logic
gates, logic families, combinational and sequential logic circuits,
microprocessors, etc.

COMPUTER SCINCE &INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Every computer science student needs to be competent with programming,

operating systems, backend and algorithmic reasoning to be successful in this
