‘The Education Undergraduate Society arranges and provides Professional Development
workshops for education students at the University of Lethbridge. This letter is written at the
request of Tracey Driedger who attended the following seminars during the months of
January and February of 201
Leonard Sproule: “CTS: What It Is and How Can I Get Involved”
This session will focus on educating students on what the CTS program is and its associated resources
which will help you see where your talents fit into the grand scheme of CTS. The CTS program has
hundreds of class options. After this session you will have the resources and beginner's know-how
needed to move towards CTS.
Sharon Pelech and Darron Kelly: “Place-Based Learning - Education is More Than Just a
Classroom”
Students make lasting memories when they experience learning ouside of the classroom. In this session
‘you will be able to learn ways that place-based learning can occur and the effects it has on students
Amy Bright: “New YA Literature for Students and Teachers: Coming Soon in 2016...”
Incorporating literature in higher grades is very difficult to many teachers. In this session Amy will
provide an overview of important YA writers and their upcoming publications in 2016. She will then
highlight authors who books are already known and used by students and teachers in middle and high
school, and provide supporting resources for sharing their texts. A sample of new titles se will discuss
include John Corey Whaley's Highly Mogical Behavior, Emery Lord's When We Collided, and Matthew
Quick's Every Exquisite Thing.
Greg Ogilvie: “English as a Second Language Leaner Needs”
Globalization has led to increased migration and the increasing prevalence of English language learners
(ELLs) in Canadian classrooms. In this hands on workshop, participants will be introduced to some key
questions to ask then preparing to instruct ELLs and some tips and techniques for adjusting instruction to
promote the success of linguistically diverse students.
Broc Higginson: “Montessori Schools”
Come and hear from a local principle that leads Fleetwood-Bawden school here in Lethbridge.
Fleetwood-Bawden is a Montessori school and in this session he will introduce you to what makes this
type of school unique. Come and see if this type of school fits your skills and professional endeavors.
Beth Cormier and Gary: “New Resources which will help you in Practicum”
Alberta Distance Learning Center (ADLC) has given the U of L free access to its student resources.
Entire courses are represented for teachers 1o use/adapt in a vartety of learning situations. Includes A/V‘material, licensed content, learning activities, assessments, and more. Come and see what this resource
can do for your teaching,
Danny Balderson: “Getting Involved in a School Through Coaching”
This session will explore how getting involved in the school culture through coaching can be a rewarding
experience and great opportunity for teacher. On the dawn of PSI, this may be something you wish to
‘pursue during your time at the school and this session will provide you with the information you need in
‘order to make the decision.
Corey Makoloski: “Introverts and Anxiety in a nutshell”
A two-part presentation ~ the first part will deal with 'the shy teacher’. Looking at some activities that
‘could be helpful in new situations and new classrooms.
A colleague of Corey's will be also be joining him, another employee of Uofl who received her Master of
Social Work, Callista Chasse, who will be speaking about anxiety and ways to help reduce it.
Amy von Heyking: “Teaching in Faith-based Schools in Alberta”
Alberta's education system offers a range of fully publicly-funded and private faith-based school options
for our students. This session will examine faith-based schooling in Alberta from the perspective of those
‘who may be interested in teaching in these contexts. It will also share the results ofthe first research
study of faith-based schools in Canada and their effectiveness in terms of graduates’ academic
‘achievements and their engagement in civic life.
Sharon Mezei: “Getting Ready for a Job: Contracts and More”
This session will be hosted by the Associate Superintendent and Human Resources for the Lethbridge
district 51 School Division. The session will deal with contracts and other important documents and
knowledge you will need when looking for a job post-graduation.
Important remark: the above named has shown exceeding dedication to their professional
development as an edueator by attending well over the required number of sessions to attain this
letter.
