A MONKEY BATH

There are many beautiful hot springs in Japan. Many people visit these warm
baths. The temperature of the baths is about 122F (50C). People relax and
enjoy the warm water and the beautiful scenery. People can relax in the hot
springs alone or with other people. But at the Korakukan baths in Nagano,
Japan, people can also relax with monkeys! These snow monkeys live in the
mountains. They come to the hot springs in the morning. They enjoy the warm
baths, too!

The snow monkeys live in wild Monkey Park. The park is near the hot springs.
There are about 270 snow monkeys in the park. The Japanese government
protects them. The monkeys are gentle, but they are not like pets. You cant
touch them because they can bite or scratch you. Also, you cant feed them.
But you can sit quietly and take a bath with them!

The snow monkeys sleep in the trees at night. They enjoy the warm baths in
the morning. About 30 years ago, a snow monkey came to the hot springs for
the first time. She put her hand into the bath to get some food. The monkey
enjoyed the warm water very much. She sat in the bath. Soon other snow
monkeys came to the hot springs, too. Now, they come every day, especially in
the cold winter.
