2.1 INTRODUCTION
Theme: ADAPTIVE REUSE

Tadashi Kawamata Mark Reigelman and Jenny Chapman

By za-bor architects
Malaysia is rich with heritage, originating from multi-cultural societies and through time creating unique
amalgamation of art, language, food and architecture. Some of these heritages are celebrated, sadly
others forgotten. When old buildings in Malaysia fell out of use, those with less historical or heritage
values tend to get demolished to make way for new developments. Even historically significant buildings
get destroyed if they were not listed as heritage buildings.

This competition looks at opportunities of taking over old, dilapidated or left-over buildings and
revitalize them with new life without having to fully demolish it. Many categories of adaptive reuse

renovations. Designers are invited to showcase creative ideas and innovations on appreciating the old
while celebrating the new.

3 PART 2 DESIGN COMPETITION
3.1 INTRODUCTION
Theme: FORWARD THINKING, INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

Evolo Skyscraper Magazine by Paul Aldridge on 12 March 2013

This competition requires the designer to harness a liberal expression of architecture in order to imagine
the future. Designing in a futuristic, imaginary world is nothing new. Visionary architects like Le
Corbusier or members of Archigram (to name a few) tried to imagine what it would be like in the future.
How would living in capsules feel? What would a floating city look like? Could living underground be a
possibility? Questions galore.

In this competition, designers are free to subscribe to any scenario Imagine a post-apocalyptic world
where building material is scarce and resources stretched; architects would have to design with severe
limitations, recycling as they go along, and with no affordances to luxury. Or imagine a post-war world
where a vast majority of the population is disabled or disfigured - how would it change architecture? Or
in a world where sea level has increased, what would a modern Venice build upon the submerged
streets of Kuala Lumpur look like?
These are a few scenarios of a possible future. It might be just a venture into the imagination, but there
is an issue or problem in each, and it is up to the designers to walk right up to it and propose a solution.
It is a bold statement, as designers are commonly presented with a problem and then find the solution.
This time around, designers are given the opportunity to predict a future problem, and work to figure
out how to solve it. Forecast the problem, be the visionary to tackle it, and be the future beacon of
humanity.
