Women currently still find hardships in the workplace because of the stereotypes that

have been accepted that defined women as passive, submissive workers of the house.

According to research done by Alan Greenblatt, Women are the CEOs of only 22 S&P

500 companies...while many companies are hiring more women into executive positions,

women often face obstacles when seeking top leadership posts (772). In addition

Greenblatt states that women are passed up for promotions even after extensive research

has been done to prove that with women in leadership positions companies see a six

percent increase to their profits (Greenblatt 773). Therefore it has been proven that

women can have a positive impact when promoted to an upper management position,

however others might doubt womens abilities to carry out leadership positions because

of the gender stereotypes that continue to create a disparity between men and women.

Creating an environment where women can feel safe also leads to an increase in the

overall quality of life for the female workers within the company. Jonathan Platt and Seth

Prins conducted research that deals with the increased sense of stress that women feel at

work. Platt and Prins concluded that because of the stress and discrimination that women

feel while at work, women tend to show increasing signs of depression and anxiety (Platt

et al. 6). Moreover this creates another gender gap between men and women in the

workplace. Since women are subject to more stress, working under those conditions

hinders productivity, which creates another obstacle stopping women from breaking the

glass ceiling. Therefore to have a successful mentorship program in the workplace, the

programs also have to address the well being of the women employees.
