optimalreasoningandperformance.Toooftenwelooktothe
lackofsleepasabadgeofhonorindicatingexemplary
endurance.Ilookbackatmyyearsasaresearcher,medical
student,andon-callinternandhowIwouldconsider30or40
hourswithoutsleepaproudachievement.Now,Irealizethat,
inthoseinstances,Ifailedtocareformyselfandoperatedin
suboptimalconditions.
Weknowthatsleeprestrictionandsleepdeprivationis
linkedwiththedevelopmentofdiseaseslikeobesity,
diabetes,andhypertension.
Researchershaveshownthatseveresleeplossjoltsthei
mmunesystemjustasstressdoes,impairingourabilityt
oproperlytacklementalandphysicaltasks
